Arcane Tattoos
Arcane Tattoos have been around for decades and there is no real written history to their origin.
History
Arcane Tattoos is believed to have started with clerics and shamans. The tattoos were said to allow the person to be closer to their deity or the spirits. Often patrons of warlocks would mark their warlock with some kind of tattoo or marking to also dominate and control their warlock. This eventually evolved to more common uses. Wizards learned that while spellbooks are helpful, they can be damaged a lot easier than tattoos so some wizards decided to tattoo themselves with their most-used spells in order not to lose them. While arcane tattoos are still uncommon, they have been seen much more recently.
Execution
Magical tattoos tend to fill one of the components of tattoos: somatic, verbal, or material. The most common is the verbal component which is the written spell on the skin in the choice of language. Material magical tattoos are the second most common type of magical tattoos. Material tattoos act more or less like magical bags or storage dimensions and the wearer is able to pull the items from the tattoos after expending some energy. If expended or lost, the materials will return within 24 hours. Because of this, material tattoos are less common and used more for important items such as weapons, family heirlooms, and the occasional key that seems to always go missing.
And lastly are the somatic component tattoos. These are the rarest due to the higher risk of complications. Somatic tattoos or motion tattoos still require some energy expended to use. If they are done poorly, it could lead to the wearer to have compulsive and uncontrolled motor movements or physical mutations and deformities. Because of the increased risks, the Archives have banned motion tattoos and these tattoos need approval by the council. Motion tattoos are typically used more for body modification such as wings, gills, and even darkvision.
Components and tools
Depending on the type of magical tattoo, depends on the equipment and professionalism required to make them. Verbal tattoos can be done by just about any professional calligrapher with knowledge of enchantment magic. Verbal tattoos simply require enchanted ink. Progressing to material tattoos requires a higher knowledge of transmutation and enchantment magic. You will need the material that will be tattooed, along with the enchanted ink.
