Dwarves are a proud and enduring race, deeply tied to their mountainous homes and rich traditions of craftsmanship and resilience. Known for their industrious nature and unwavering sense of duty, dwarves have built vast underground kingdoms that stand as testaments to their skill and unity. Guided by their gods, Morgrim and Thaldruna, dwarves embody the balance between creation and community, forging a culture that is as unyielding as the stone they call home.

 
 

Physical Characteristics

  • Appearance: Dwarves are stocky and muscular, standing between 4 and 5 feet tall. They have broad features, with thick hair and beards that are often intricately braided, symbolizing their connection to tradition and heritage. Their skin tones range from earthy browns to pale stone-like hues, with hair colors varying by ethnicity.
  • Lifespan: Dwarves mature at age 50 and live up to 350 years, their long lives filled with dedication to their craft and kin.
  • Height and Build: Compact and powerful, dwarves are built for endurance and strength.
 
 

Cultural Traits

  • Craftsmanship: Dwarves are unparalleled smiths, masons, and artisans, creating wonders that last for generations.
  • Community and Tradition: Deeply tied to their kin and culture, dwarves uphold traditions that foster unity and mutual support.
  • Resilience: Known for their endurance and determination, dwarves thrive in harsh environments and excel in overcoming challenges.
 
 

Ethnicities

Dwarves are divided into four distinct ethnic groups, each reflecting unique aspects of their culture and values:

 

1. Draknhold Dwarves

Region: Mountain fortresses and great forges deep within the Brynstone Range.
Appearance: Sturdy with soot-streaked skin tones and dark, ash-colored hair. Their eyes gleam like molten metal.
Culture: Industrious smiths and architects, Draknhold Dwarves embody Morgrim’s ideals of perfection through labor, dedicating their lives to crafting unparalleled wonders.

 

2. Hearthfire Dwarves

Region: Peaceful mountain valleys and communal halls near Brynstone’s foothills.
Appearance: Warm, earthy skin tones with golden or auburn hair braided with small charms.
Culture: Guardians of kin and tradition, Hearthfire Dwarves honor Thaldruna’s teachings by fostering community and defending their homes.

 

3. Stonevein Dwarves

Region: Subterranean tunnels and mines, often near trade routes.
Appearance: Pale, stone-like skin with silver or slate-colored hair. Their eyes shimmer like polished gems.
Culture: Pragmatic miners and traders, Stonevein Dwarves act as explorers and diplomats, ensuring the prosperity and survival of their people.

 

4. Ironblood Dwarves

Region: Rugged hills and battle-scarred fortresses on the borders of dwarven lands.
Appearance: Ruddy or bronze skin with coarse, dark hair and scarred features from frequent combat.
Culture: Fierce warriors and hunters, Ironblood Dwarves embrace martial traditions and thrive in the harshest environments.

 

5. Rootward Dwarves

Region: Forested hills and ancestral groves along the eastern Brynstone Range
Appearance: Earthen-toned skin with hair in shades of deep brown, auburn, or mossy green, often worn in braided cords or knotted leather. Face paints or ritual markings are common.
Culture: Spiritual lorekeepers and guardians of tradition, Rootward Dwarves follow the teachings of Brômak and the Way of the Root. They preserve dwarven memory through ritual, story, and ancestral reverence, living in harmony with the land and serving as quiet stewards of its deeper wisdom.  
 

Role in History

Dwarves have played pivotal roles in Wakodia’s history, from crafting legendary artifacts to defending their lands during the Arcane Cataclysm. Their kingdoms stand as bastions of stability and ingenuity, often serving as allies or protectors to neighboring races. Despite their isolationist tendencies, dwarves have proven time and again that their resilience and unity make them indispensable to the balance of power in Wakodia.

 
 

Relationships with Other Races

  • Humans: Dwarves respect human adaptability but often find their short lives lead to impatience. Trade relationships, particularly in Vexalhime, are strong.
  • Elves: Dwarves and elves share a mutual respect for craftsmanship and tradition, though their differing approaches to magic can create tension.
  • Halflings: Dwarves appreciate halflings’ community focus and often trade with Meadowkin and Goldburrow halflings.
  • Gnomes: A shared love of innovation fosters strong bonds, especially between Draknhold Dwarves and Ironspire Gnomes.

Dwarves’ enduring legacy lies in their craftsmanship, resilience, and unyielding dedication to their kin. Their mountain halls are symbols of strength and ingenuity, and their cultural influence continues to shape Wakodia’s history and future. From the ringing of hammers in Morgrim’s forges to the protective flames of Thaldruna’s hearths, the dwarves’ contributions are as lasting as the stone they revere.

Playing as a Dwarf

  Dwarf Traits   Size: Medium.   Speed: Your base walking speed is 25 feet.   Darkvision: Accustomed to life underground, you can see in dim light within 60 feet as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can’t discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.   Stonecunning: Whenever you make an Intelligence (History) check related to the origin of stonework, you are considered proficient in the History skill and add double your proficiency bonus to the check.   Enduring Resolve: You have advantage on saving throws against being poisoned and resistance to poison damage.   Languages: You can speak, read, and write Common and Dwarvish.
