The Big Five: The Goodmen
Welcome to the Goodmen, ladies and gents. You've all been individually recruited for one reason or another. Maybe you impressed one of our members. Maybe you received a good word from many people for some of the things you've done. Maybe you were a veteran like our founders. You found yourself unfit for service or decided that military life isn't for you. Any of those reasons and more are a damn fine reason to join us. I'm Rulf Herboch, Veteran Pikeman. I'll be showing you the ropes today and for the next few weeks before I let you start your duties. Yes, the lot of you will be called by your skill. I'm skilled with polearms. Spears, pikes, halberds, glaives, you name it. Hence the name Pikeman Herboch. You are granted such a name at the end of your training by yours truly. Now then, twenty push-ups. Go on, then. While you struggle or breeze through our exercises, I'm going to give you our three-part code. If you forget it after I speak it, that's another twenty. Good? Good.
First, don't ever break the law to suit your own needs. As said by his majesty, King Gentrovich III, we are merely an extension of The Bulwark. Second, and what I think to be the most important rule, treat citizens the way you would want to be treated. Unless a bugger is swinging around a dirk and slashing holes in the air, most people tend to be somewhat reasonable. The best way to get someone to work with you is to work with them. Treat them like they're a person with feelings. You have feelings. So do they.
Third. Never get yourself in over your head. Mark me, I and no one other Goodmen will ever expect you to handle a dire situation all by yourself. You not only have us, you are also more than entitled to ask the Bulwark's men for assistance.
Now then, off your arses and give me a summary of what I just said.
Structure
The Goodmen have no defining ranks. They instead give titles based upon skill and experience. For example, a veteran skilled with explosives would be called Grenadier and a person skilled with a sword would be called Swordsman. The only true rank The Goodmen possess is their leader which they refer to as commander. The current commander is Sergen Berwick
Culture
The Goodmen was founded by a small group of Harushkan War veterans in 178 under the name of the Gray Guard. They formed in response to the lack of local policing due to Taelor's Bulwark being primarily fixated on the wars. They were volunteer police and were generally referred to as "The Goodmen" hence where they earned the name.
Public Agenda
The Goodmen serve as an extension of the law in cities that have a lack of Bulwark activity or as a special police force to assist the guard during wartime.
Assets
The Goodmen have a habit of refurbishing old buildings and using them as places of operation and outposts instead of building new ones. They have a decent amount of wealth and have direct assistance from the Bulwark itself. Most of the Goodmen's assets come from its members.
History
178 - Founding
179-203 - Rockily making their place in Gentrov as secondary law enforcement.
204 - King Gentrovich III officially recognizes The Goodmen as the right hand of Taelor's Bulwark. This year also marks them taking up the name "The Goodmen" due to Gentrovich III believing it was their actual name.
205-377 - The Goodmen go from being the predominant law-enforcement in the land to slowly drifting to the sidelines as the final conflicts of the Harushkan Wars burnt out.
378-388 - The Goodmen, in secret, snuck their magic users out of the country and into hiding all over Ordia in response to the Arcane Genocide.
389-present - Despite the conflicts between the Bulwark and the Church, the Goodmen vowed to not get involved and merely wished to carry out law wherever necessary.
"Where the law ends, we begin."
