Travelling in Space

Travelling within a region

Travelling within a region takes a standard 48hours. This uses the starship's manoeuvring thrusters. During this time, the fuel will not be reduced.

The amount of time can be affected by a character's Astronavigation skill. A successful skill roll will reduce the time taken by 1d4 hours. A critical will reduce the time by 2d4 hours. A fail will keep the travel time at 48 hours, while a fumble will increase the time by 1d4 hours.

Travelling between regions, for example, from close orbit to far orbit or from the surface of a planet to the Void Gate, takes a standard 6 days. The rating of the manoeuvring thrusters can reduce this, but can never be reduced to less than one day.

The amount of time can be affected by a character's Astronavigation skill. A successful skill roll will reduce the time taken by 1d4 days. A critical will reduce the time by 2d4 days. A fail will keep the travel time at 6 days, while a fumble will increase the time by 1d4 days.

Void Gate Travel

Void gate travel depends on several variables. These are the unit of time of the void gate jump, the standard time taken and the rating of the Void Drive. However, the total amount of time can never be reduced to less than one time unit.

To calculate the time it takes for a ship to travel between void gates, deduct the drive rating from the total time of the journey.

The cost of the jump, which is taken off automatically upon entering the gate, is calculated by multiplying the following variables together.

  • The standard cost of any jump - 1000Cr
  • Multiplied by the time unit factor - for weeks this is x1, for months x2
  • Multiplied by the number of weeks or months
  • Multiplied by the rating of the Void Drive

Using this method, ships with a larger Void Drive will be charged more, but will make the jump quicker. While ships with small drives take longer but at a lower cost. The is no astronavigation roll needed for Void gate Travel.

Recharge Time

Once a ship has used its Void Drive it needs to be recharged. This takes the number of days equal to the void drive's rating.

Travelling to Gateless systems

It is possible to use the ship's void drive to jump to systems that do not have a Void Gate. Travelling to these systems needs a successful astronavigation roll takes 14 days with a successful astronavigation roll reducing this by 1d4 days. If the roll is a fail, then the time is increased by 2d4 days and, if the roll is a fumble, then 2d4 days is added to the time but the ship will also take damage to a system when it jumps. The Void Drive then takes the number of days equal to the void drive's rating to recharge.

Travelling to gateless systems can take a lengthy amount of time and is dangerous. If the system has not been mapped before, then the astronavigation roll is HARD or even higher if the GM has decided the contain of the system before hand. The crew could be flying straight into an asteroid belt of a star that is about to go super nova!

Gates in systems are created by The Void Company using huge star ships called Gate Cruiser - often referred to as Gate Crashers! These ships have a mix of human and drone crew and have a hull that is completely matt, reflecting no light at all. No one has ever boarded a Gate Cruiser and returned. Their secrets remain hidden.

Travelling between Districts

To travel between districts, ships need to have not only a Void Drive but must also be equipped with cryogenic tubes. The time to travel between Districts is measured in months to years. Cryogenic tubes allow this time to pass without significant aging effect on the travellers.

District travel requires a special Void Gate that is usually positioned in the District's main system, although this is not always the case. Due to the nature of these gates, they are positioned well out of range of all the gravity wells. To travel within the system to these gate requires 12 +/- 1d3 days.

The cost for travelling through these gates is the same as for Void Gate Travel although the time factor is x5 and the recharge time is equal to the number of months equal to the drive rating.

Within a Region: 48 hours

Between Regions: 6 days

Between Void Gates: Variable
