Foraging, Gathering Skill

Foraging allows you to collect herbs.   An adventurer can obtain herbs from nature by foraging. Herbs grow in different locations around the world, and in many different climates. An adventurer can attempt to forage for these special and useful herbs, and store them in an herb pouch.   Herbs have unique properties that set them apart from standard flora. Each herb has its own effect when a person ingests them. Only one herb effect can be active at a time. Ingesting an herb while already under the effects of one yields no results. The second herb is wasted, and the effect of the first continues as normal. An herb requires an action to ingest, unless otherwise stated. Having a higher Foraging level will allow you to find more valuable herbs.   Foraging Process   You can forage twice per long rest. This activity takes 1 hour. For every +5 you beat the DC of the herb by, you get an extra one of it.   Sometimes, a skillful forager manages to harvest a few extra herbs when they are scavenging. When you successfully forage an herb, roll percentile dice. If you roll a 95% or higher, you gain an extra two of that herb. 
  • Roll a Nature or Survival check. If your roll equals or exceeds the herb's DC, you find the herb.
  • Roll the corresponding die to determine how many herbs you obtain. 
  • You gain Foraging XP equal to the level of the herb you obtained + your current Foraging level. (If you fail to forage an herb, you instead gain 1d4-1 Foraging XP).
Foraging While Traveling   If you are traveling, it makes searching for herbs more difficult. Use this chart to increase the DC of the herb depending on the pace you are traveling

  • This tool allows the forager to gather more ingredients easily, without unwanted damage to any nearby herbs. For herbs that allow you to roll for the quantity you obtain, you may reroll any 1 until you roll a higher number.

  • Character gains use of the Feat: Healer. (PHB 167)
  • Character gains access to Farming Guilds and knows the location of any important foraging areas such as groves and herb patches.
