Personal history
Once, the name Varen Dawnstar was synonymous with valor. He stood at the vanguard of his kingdom, wielding his sword with unmatched prowess and leading his people to victory against countless foes. Varen was a champion, a beacon of hope for the oppressed, and a shield for the innocent. His loyalty was unwavering, and his honour unshakeable. The Kingdom of Felnore flourished under his protection, and the people sang songs of his deeds. But in the shadows, King Raytheen, driven by his lust for power, had made a dark pact with a demonic entity - Vorgaroth, The Ashen King.
One fateful night, Varen discovered the king’s treachery too late. He was ambushed, stripped of his honour, and forced to witness his comrades and loved ones slain before his eyes. The demon watched, grinning from the shadows, as the king cursed Varen with a dark fate—an eternal cycle of suffering. “May you return as the lowest of men, forever denied the peace of death,” the king spat, condemning him to reincarnation as the lowest of life. Varen’s final moments were filled with pain and rage, and the last thing he saw was the silhouette of the grinning demon as life slipped away.
Varen was reborn as Hal Woodson, a child to a nameless peasant woman who perished soon after his birth. Sold into servitude, Hal grew up enduring the worst that life could offer. Hunger, pain, and ridicule were his constant companions. He never understood why fate seemed to hate him, why he was beaten for the smallest missteps, or why those around him held only contempt. Hal bore it all in silence, yet within him, the spirit of Varen simmered, forgotten yet undying.
By the age of seventeen, the abuse had carved out every ounce of hope and trust within him, replacing them with rage and bitterness. When he was thrown out into an alley to die after yet another brutal beating, something awoke within Hal. His pain and anger called out like a beacon, and in the dark recesses of the alley, Raakthos, a fiend that had a lust for destruction but needed a living host to inhabit, sensed an opportunity. The demon, unaware of Hal’s true identity, attempted to possess him, thinking he had found a weak and broken soul.
But Varen’s soul was not so easily subdued.
The possession went awry. Instead of being consumed, Hal’s soul resisted, and the two entities became entwined. The corruption took root in his right arm and eye, warping them with demonic power. Hal’s transformation was excruciating. He cried out in agony, his scream echoing through the alley. The peasant master who had owned him rushed out, enraged by the disturbance, but Hal—now part human, part fiend—reacted on instinct. His demonic arm created a blood red blade carved with demonic symbols, and he struck, leaving his tormentor a lifeless, bloody heap.
As he staggered and collapsed from the strain, Hal’s fractured mind made a vow. He would reclaim what was stolen from him. He would conquer the kingdom that had betrayed him, and bring ruin to those who had defiled his honor. Yet within him, Raakthos whispered of vengeance and chaos, urging him not to rebuild, but to burn the entire kingdom to the ground.
Now driven by a dual purpose—one of reclaiming his rightful place as Varen and one of yielding to the destructive urges of Raakthos—Hal Woodson has set his sights on the kingdom that betrayed him. To its people, he is a nameless monster, an avenging shadow of their past mistakes. To the few who glimpse his unholy power and demonic visage, he is an omen of the end times.
But to Varen, he is the man destined to rewrite his story in blood and fire, reclaiming the city that was stolen from him, while Raakthos revels in the promise of devastation.
