Spirit Jars
The Spirit Jars of Abrana are a carefully perfected science of a country that has put any and all technological efforts toward torturing their enemies. These Jars are a meticulously crafted advancement in their methods, allowing the Spark of a tortured victim to be trapped, seemingly forever, in a clay jar. These Jars have been designed with a myriad of uses and methods of torture, and are one of the closest studied aspects of Abranian society - simply because so much of the culture is closed to the outside world.
While the interior spellwork of the Jar can cause plenty of problems, the magical locks on the Jars also cause extreme pain, continuing the victim's torture until they are released, or until they descend into madness. This madness creates a Shade, a dark spirit bent on destroying all it sees - if the Jar is opened. These Shades are mostly mischievous trouble-causers and rarely dangerous, but some have managed to kill when given the power and opportunity.
The invention of the Spirit Jar is shrouded in mystery, including when it was invented. The oldest Jar is estimated to have been sealed around the time of the discovery of the Trees of Power, and rumored to have been kept in the Abranian ruler's office as a trophy of sorts. No one knows who was kept inside the first Jar, but thousands more have fallen victim to this cruel torture over the millenia.
