Spirit Jars

The Spirit Jars of Abrana are a carefully perfected science of a country that has put any and all technological efforts toward torturing their enemies. These Jars are a meticulously crafted advancement in their methods, allowing the Spark of a tortured victim to be trapped, seemingly forever, in a clay jar. These Jars have been designed with a myriad of uses and methods of torture, and are one of the closest studied aspects of Abranian society - simply because so much of the culture is closed to the outside world.

While the interior spellwork of the Jar can cause plenty of problems, the magical locks on the Jars also cause extreme pain, continuing the victim's torture until they are released, or until they descend into madness. This madness creates a Shade, a dark spirit bent on destroying all it sees - if the Jar is opened. These Shades are mostly mischievous trouble-causers and rarely dangerous, but some have managed to kill when given the power and opportunity.

Creation

The invention of the Spirit Jar is shrouded in mystery, including when it was invented. The oldest Jar is estimated to have been sealed around the time of the discovery of the Trees of Power, and rumored to have been kept in the Abranian ruler's office as a trophy of sorts. No one knows who was kept inside the first Jar, but thousands more have fallen victim to this cruel torture over the millenia.

Spellwork

The intricate spellwork of the Spirit Jars has been carefully picked apart by hundreds of Arcanists over the years, only to result in further confusion. Much of the magic is unknown to the rest of the world, orginating in and never escaping the borders of Abrana. While many of the Jars were broken in the Impact of the Strutheo Star, some reinforced Jars have survived to be studied today.

Sigils

The Sigils painted onto the Jars typically picture scenes from the life of the trapped individual, used to carefully bind them wholely to the Jar with no chance of escape. The lines can be angular or curved, creating a maze of magic that the Spark inside cannot navigate.

Seals

The Seals of the Jars are tricksters, generally used not only to keep a Spark trapped inside, but also to curse whoever opens them. Many have died to a freshly opened Jar and the Shade that escapes from within, but many more have lived heavily cursed lives.

Construction

Each Jar must be created from the start with the intention to become a Spirit Jar; not just any clay jar will do. The creator of each Jar - of which there are thousands across Abrana - begins with raw clay pulled from the banks of the Dewgong River, and carefully shapes the Jar for the individual that it will be holding. No one is sure if they are told who they will be trapping during the creation of the Jar, but some theorize the creators receive divine guidance during the process. Once the Jar is completely dried and fired in a kiln, it is glazed and put through the spellwork to become a true Spirit Jar.

Styles

Spirit Jars come in many colors, shapes, and sizes, each built for the Spark it will hold. Arcanists have studied the variations deeply, but it is still unknown if the spellwork contained within is affected by these factors.

Color Variations

While most of the Jars have a similar base color due to the clay used to create them, some Jars are fully glazed in a variety of colors. The glazes used to paint the Jars are often mixed with the blood of the Jar's creator, creating a stronger magical binding between the Sigils and Seals.
