Wellsy's Summercamp 2025 Prep

Hello people of the internet. It is I, Wellsy, returning for my 2nd? 3rd? Summercamp prep (yay!). I feel like I haven't done tons of new articles this year as I have been working on updating old ones but this is a great time to introduce some crazy new ideas and expand the world of Violem further. Competitions like this always give us that extra motivation to write something that is worthy of adding to the world and hopefully expanding on pre-existing lore. Good luck to everyone taking part and enjoy the ride :)

Week 1: Nourishment

So looking back at my new years resolutions (check here Wellsy's 2025 Resolutions) I wanted to focus on the following:
  • Continue to update old articles, 1 article per week if possible
  • Write more short stories within the world, its the whole point I joined World Anvil
  • Challenge myself to write one of every article template over the next year
Now looking at these resolutions, the old articles are slowly getting there, and even the article template is going well (I have like 5 left to complete :D). But the resolution that has gotten the least love so far is writing more short stories, so for this year's summercamp I would like to put more effort into narratives that I can sprinkle into my articles.   As for an area of focus, I will get round to that. I have been leaning towards the city of Sianwood, the city of flowers. For a solo campaign I am slowly (and I do mean slowly) getting through full of plant based monsters, the science of alchemy and potion brewing and nature in a world abundant with magic. I think focusing on that city and giving it some love would be great.

Week 2: Roots

So going into the history, origins and what makes Sianwood tick, I think it would be cool to focus on Zadryn's Brewery, the largest potion production business on the continent and the Curse Healers who are a dedicated group of healers forged after the recent civil war. Perhaps exploring the effects of civil war on this city could help expand that part of history I have always struggled to give a definitive timeline for.   Looking back at previous challenges, I have found ideas and prep that has worked and things that haven't worked. I always like to aim for the lowest amount of articles so I don't feel so overwhelmed by the amount of work I need to do. I have also found that a central character or narrator can really help to add that narrative aspect I am hoping to create and aid my new year's resolution. Even the latest unofficial challenge I tried March of 31 Tales helped drill into my head that planning things in advance actually helps not just for creativity but to stop burn out. 'Cause nothing stops the creative juices flowing than staring at a blank page with nowhere to start. So yeah, better start planning.

Week 3:

What changes and adaptations have people in Violem gone through?
  • Living amongst the Acuran only to worshipping them as a thing of the past
  • Accepting Minauran more into everyday society after the slaughter (Poem from the Wordsmiths)
  • Living in an age of peace after a civil war (New trading links via Cart N Cart)
  • Living life in fear of realms after the portal ban (links to Fall of Li-I-Vu)
Take inspiration from new artists.   Listening to Folktronica – a blend of electronic and folk music, utilises uncommon effects. Really like it, often feel ethereal. Nice blend of real instruments and synths. Makes me think of modern day bards. Jeff the Bard, a one man band who is a Plasmid creature. Completing medieval covers of pop music unknown in the world of Violem. Or the differences between a musician from Gillan city of Wae-Vun compared to Ignea tribes or choirs in Toufan. One could more drone notes and long reverbs. Sustained chords that slowly automate in variation (Gillan). Whilst the other could be experimental using new instruments in the world, or using common instruments in new ways, maybe creating a more dissonant key that is not meant to be musical but a form of disruptive magic (Toufan). Or lots of rhythm for the tribal music, drums, percussion but slower due to the body structure of Ka-Ko-Rae (Ignea)   Cubism – looking into Cubism and learning its about taking something, breaking it apart and reassembling it again in a new form. Most art has a subject of some kind and is often abstract. Feel like looking at some characters in Violem, analysing the core of the character and then spinning the core of them into something else. Izamariah is, Educated, Confident, Tactical, Arrogant, Condescending making a character who wants to be the centre of attention. What if I spin that into an alter ego, or a doppleganger that could appear in a future story. A leader figure who has won countless battles and is so sure of themselves they cant possibly imagine losing. His father perhaps, showing the worse elements of the character and what he will become if Izamariah doesn’t change. Or maybe the location of Drovvin is an ancient noble stronghold that is traditional and tough. But you could see that as a dictatorship that refuses to change its ways, rejecting modernism and a shambles behind the scenes cause they cant keep up with the present.   Other Worldbuilders:   Stormbril – I like it is not just an exposition dump and goes into detail about certain elements. Not giving big generalisations and has taken care in the layout including interactive sections and more complex banners to segment the article parts. I want to incorporate that in my future articles.   Make Lore, Not War – it gives a clear introduction to the world and guides to help newcomers navigate the world and a quick Q&A about what to expect. Clearly thought about the world and what to add. I would love to be more concise with Violem and how guide people to things that I hope will excite them. Navigation online and user interface is not my strong suit.   Kranjax – A nice example of making something good without needing to be the highest tier on WorldAnvil. Giving time and thought about the article and simply answering prompts helps expand the worldbuilding process. I still use the prompts occasionally but format them a bit differently. I thin in the future I could spend more time focusing on the prompts and giving some details could help develop my articles which are often simplified compared to many other Anvilites? Is that what we’re called?

Week 4:

What is happening now that will impact the future?   Current events in this world include my campaigns. The adventures of the Heroic Trio, the quest of Vitor Hue and his search for Shara's String Quartet. Depending on whether they are successful or not will determine what the future holds. There is an election happening in Elsgard that will eventually change the political campaign of the city.   But on the smaller scale of things, I suppose I could look at the seasons changng and the natural habitat or migration pattern of certain animals and monsters. maybe there is a Takknir swarm building up outside of Sianwood due to th warmer weather. Or maybe a prophecy written by seers hundreds of years ago will come to fruition. I have plans for the near future but I don't want to share them just yet.   Prep Time   Okay, so in terms of prep. I have outlines for about eight articles. Just real basic bullet points that I could use for various prompts as well as a solid idea on how to add more narrative for each one. Using a new character and exploring the world through their eyes. As for scheduling I found during the challenge March of 31 Tales working in the morning and writing before work worked really well. Get it out of the way early in case I have a long day and can't be bothered on the evening.
Good luck to everyone taking part this year :)
