Nhara Vrue aka Dream Eaters

Nhara Vrue, also known as the Dream Eaters, are a parasite from another realm that infects the dreams of sleepers. Causing hallucinations and nightmares to scare the dreamer into creating an abundance fearful energy to feed on. The more fear that is produced, the stronger the Nhara Vrue becomes, capable of putting a dreamer into an eternal slumber, forever trapped in the lands of nightmares. The process of feeding off this energy can become so extreme to the point where the dreamer either dies of fright and exhaustion. Or they are woken prematurely and go insane, refusing to sleep ever again, transforming into an animalistic beast known as a Wight.
Have you ever had a bad dream? Or perhaps woken up from a nightmare? Don't worry young one, it happens to all of us at some point or another. But, let me ask you this, what if it kept happening? What it continued for days or worse, weeks? Well, if that is the case, then you might have Nhara Vrue tucked inside your pillowcase.

Appearance:

The miniscule creatures are believed to spawn in the mortal plane when a high enough concentration of fear is present in one location. From there, these pea sized insects float into homes, hiding in the clothing and bedding of larger beings. Once nested comfortably, the Nhara Vrue let out small puffs of toxic gas to infect dreams.   At first, the dream eater may appear rather innocent. Initially looking friendly with rounded features such as eye sockets, mouth and two smooth fins that protrude from its spherical body. The longer these bugs feed on fearful energies, it grows in strength and appearance. Becoming more barbed and rough in nature. Spines protrude from its back, the fins become sharp to touch. Even the once rounded eyes and mouth will begin to resemble edges broken glass.

Actions:

Tired Eye: The dream eater secretes an invisible gas that seeps into the minds of within a 10ft radius. Upon a successful hit, the gas places the target into a deep sleep that is run by nightmares and hallucinations.

Throughout History:

Various texts that date back to the reign of the Pharaoh of Fear state the Nhara Vrue appeared in abundance. Laying waste to entire villages and creating an increase in Wight sightings during the hundred year period. The fear and nightmares vanished almost overnight when the Pharoah was eventually slain.   In the present day, many presume the Nhara Vrue have gone extinct, due to the lack of sightings and reports. They are however whispers in the shadows of the Shrouded Valley that speak of a warrior who had fallen into an eternal slumber centuries before. Kept in a state of fear and buried deep under the valley to keep the Nhara Vrue from infecting others. Workers for Sooty & Grime have reported seeing their deepest fears come to life in the deepest mine shafts, causing an inefficiency to the workforce.

These guys are pretty scary, even though they look rather cute! I like the dichotomy. I have a dream eater in my own world, but it's completely different. I love how different world builders can have completely different takes on the same thing! Finally, I know they say they are extinct, but I have trouble believing it. I'm sure that wherever there are nightmares, you're sure to find some lying around.
