Summer Camp 2024

Then & Now

Yay! My 5th SummerCamp has arrived! I'm looking forward to it, especially since they kept last years set-up of four different waves of themes. I love the variety, it's so much fun. I'm so curious what they're going to be!   Same as last year, I'll be aiming for Copper and writing down my ideas in my notebook for max creativity. And with blue pens, of course. Unlike last year, I'll be doing my best to actually remember to transfer those ideas from paper to article. Woops (,,>﹏<,,)   All of the previous years this world, Vilyiterna has been my sole focus. This time around I'll be trying out something new and including my other worlds as well. Vilyiterna will remain the primary focus by and far, but prompts I'm having a harder time with will be shared with other worlds as well. After all, the prompt limit is restricted by author, not by world. May as well take advantage of it.   Now to go prepare a good notebook, some blue pens, warm blankets, hot chocolate and chai lattes. It'll be a fun and cosy Winter Camp for me.

Wave 1 - Change

Change is a continuous process ever present in the world. Nothing ever truly remains in stasis, second by second, day by day, year by year, everything moves on. Everything as large as the end an beginning of a new era or a new law, and as small as the blooming of flowers or the building of new habits, comes under it's purvew. I plan on focussing on the marking of these changes and the more mundane transitions of everyday life.   Vilyiterna is a world marked and scarred by changes large and small. The current era started with a global apocalypse which broke and grew and broke again empires, nations and peoples. Even now the world grows from the aftermath. Borders change, trade routes develop, people continue developing and celebrating their cultures. Honestly, I'd have a harder time finding a part of it that remains the same.   I intend on using this wave to mark the transitions and consequences of the changing world powers and most importantly, how the everymans' everyday was affected by it   Some articles I'm hoping to write are things on timepieces such as calendars, markers like festivals and memorials and small, everyday traditions born from the Twilight Era Apocalypse.

Wave 2 - Refuge

A refuge is a place of rest and recuperation, a sanctuary, escape or a hideaway which shields you from the harshness of the evryday and the violence of the extreme. A refuge may be a literal place, such as a wide roof during a storm, a shelter or a bar. Or it could could be an event, item, person or transition which provides even the smallest of reprieves from whatever ails a person. Even a lunch break on a busy day counts. Refuges help a person bear the weight of life. I plan on focussing on the smaller rests and greater shelters.   Vilyiterna has a rough history and even rougher environment. Places to beat the weather, natural disasters, breaks from travel and hideaways from conflicts are all over the place. There's no way there isn't a fitting match amongst them somewhere.   This theme is perfect for one of my fanfic WIPS. The characters go to a kids shelter/home. Fanfic related ideas are in so long as the content of the worldbuilding itself is original so it's totally safe, especially as it's a modern AU. I can see myself using this to develop my dnd world too. I could make a bar or a hidden guild or the like.   I won't lie, this one's been a tricky one to wrangle my head around but I have a few ideas. Overall I think I'll use this to develop public infrastructure and cultural breathers like breaks and festivals.   Fingers crossed I can use a prompt for a pub or bar, that'd be fun. I'd love to develop some more mundane public infrasture too, like gazebos in city centres or park to hide from the rain or places for people to relax and play. Wouldn't mind a festival either. And that kids shelter too.

Wave 3 - Belief

Belief is a flexible but fundamental part of the human experience. It builds upon community, culture and perspective. It is the driving force behind history, ambition and change. Everyone has their own personal beliefs. It affects everything from a persons daily routine to the direction of their nation. Religion and faith are the big ones, but beyond that there are personal ambitions, views of right and wrong, social ettiquette, old wives tales, the supernatural, the paranormal, myths and legends, political views and scientific theories. Beliefs are the backbone of the everyday, the mundane and the extreme, connecting everyone from all walks of life. In this wave I will be focussing on the interconnections of beliefs, the relationships and the mundane everyday experiences they create.   Vilyiterna is run by several major players that control the 7 continents, 5 major trade routes and ennumourous nations, faiths and religions. The rapid redevelopment into the new era and the interactions between the various major players have built in all manner of beliefs. Even now they continue to develop, mingle and change as the world resettles into the new era. Religions, political parties, legal policies, cultural morals, social norms, they've all been affected and evolve around eachother. The world is one rife with views steering its course to and fro as the people keep on living within it.   My dnd world needs some major, major work on all it's systems. I think this theme could make for a nice sturdy backbone, don't you. I might be able to bounce off of the prompts for random, smaller og short stories too.   In regards to my main world, Vilyiterna, I intend to work on the structure of the everyday and the motivations driving the major forces of policies and world culture. For my dnd world I plan on building the backbone of the world, even if just a few focus locations to start.   Beliefs that have made there way into everyday habits would be fun, I can't think of an example right now though.

Wave 4 - Decay

(My understanding of the theme)Decay, the act of destruction in the process of renewal. It is oftentimes a slow and tedious task though on occasion it may happen so rapidly it leaves you dizzy. Sometimes it causes upset, both controlled and not, such as is the failing of personal bonds, the fall of an empire or the erosion of soil making way for a landslide. Other times it brings new life to take advantage of or control, such as a volcano bringing nutrients to future farmland through it's fury or the creation of new foods and dyes through fermentation. It is a dangerous but necessary part of life to be both feared and celebrated. Without it there be no new soil to tend, liquor to drink, nor bread to eat. I hope to use this segment to write on the benefits of decay, the ways it can be used and the reason it should be as lauded as it is dreaded.   (How it relates to Vilyiterna)   (How it relates to other worlds if applicable)   (My impression of the wave, what I want to do with it) If there's no fungi prompt i riot.   (potential articles)

Wild Cards

I'm honestly really looking forward to the wild cards this year. Because this years themes just aren't clicking for me, especially refuge, really struggling on that on that one. I might manage with belief, and maybe even decay, but we'll see. I'm guessing we'll get a good variety. A vehicle prompt I can use for a ship would be helpful. I really need to develop my boats.
