Lanas
Lanas is a large city in western Estaria, just north of The Green Sea. It was once the capital of Estaria for the tenth through the fourteenth century, until it was sacked and annexed by Sura Pel in 1378 SE. It has since returned under the control of Estaria, but Solgrad has permanently replaced it as the nation's capital.
Lanas was the natural selection for Estaria's capital. After King Edwyn the Holy lead a coalition of human city states to oust the Giants from the Lowland Collar in 903 SE. Not only was the city-state the birthplace of King Edwyn, but the city was centrally located in Estaria's early territory; whereas Solgrad was far to the northeast, making it an ineffective seat of government. Lastly, the land surrounding Lanas was fertile, and Solgrad's overdeveloped and ruinous land was better for defense than farming, making Lanas ideal for an explosion in human population.
Lanas flourished during the expansion of Estarian from the tenth to fourteenth centuries. However its relevance waned as other powerful empires like Prekha and Sura Pel rose up around Estaria, giving the more militarily powerful Solgrad an increasing significance.
After it's surrender, the Sura Pel, annexed the city of Lanas, making it a center of production for its empire before its fall. As with all of Sura Pel's captured territory, the Sura Empire allowed civilians from Lanas to migrate or keep their property and integrate into Schulanist society. Most citizens of Landren remained, and their descendants live in the city to this day (though ancestry is difficult to prove since Estarians and Surasi are both Auklan).
Lanas has since regained its wealth as a hub for trade with T'Ched and a foothold of Estarian power in the Green Sea. However, its geographic location has waned in value since the fronts in the Crescent Sea and Passi Sea have massively overtaken the city's importance.
History
Lanas was a human city state dating back far before the Creationist Cataclysm. Like all human settlements, it slowly grew in size, population and technology in the early days of the Age of Work. Lanas is in an area of dense human ruins from the Age of Form, and that gave the people of Lanas an advantage in rediscovering ancient technology. Lanas is thought to be the first human city-state to rediscover crucible steel. By the mid eighth century, Lanas forgemasters were producing articulated plate-armor, making them the strongest human military in the region.Lanas was the natural selection for Estaria's capital. Sura Pel's Occupation
In 1387, the warlord Palva Korr of Sura Pel sieged and sacked Lanas with an army of over two-hundred-thousand human and Droven knights, killing King Edwyn Hesphus II. The attack came as a shock to Estaria, both because the royals of Estaria were unaware of Sura Pel's strength, and because the Auklan humans of the Lowland Collar had seldom encountered Droven before that, and nearly all Estarian men-at-arms had never encountered them in battle. After it's surrender, the Sura Pel, annexed the city of Lanas, making it a center of production for its empire before its fall. As with all of Sura Pel's captured territory, the Sura Empire allowed civilians from Lanas to migrate or keep their property and integrate into Schulanist society. Estaria Reintegration
In 1720, Sura Pel was recaptured by King Eiknir the Great in the early years of the Sunrise War, after the Battle of Lanas Pel. Dymaeo Edward of Prekha was instrumental in the battle.Lanas has since regained its wealth as a hub for trade with T'Ched and a foothold of Estarian power in the Green Sea. However, its geographic location has waned in value since the fronts in the Crescent Sea and Passi Sea have massively overtaken the city's importance.
Culture
Lanas has a unique mix of Schulanist and Atovist influence. Their style of dress leans toward Schulanist influence, with shrouded dress for people of authority, reminiscent to the pagans of northern T'Ched.Religion
Current-day Lanas is majority Atovism (specifically Orthodox Atovism), but its also the largest concentration of Schulanists remaining in Vildrel. Several Schulanist churches exist in Lanas, and the Schulanist religion has influenced Lanas art and dress, particularly with flowing silk fabric and the depiction of Aberrations in powerful, and even sexual positions in art.
