The Occult Constable (OC) is the entry-level operational rank within the Occult Felony Bureau. Often deployed alongside regular Police Constables, OCs serve as the Bureau’s first line of response to magical disturbances, ritual crimes, and phenomena beyond conventional explanation.

Though their arcane training is limited compared to senior ranks, Occult Constables are expected to possess a natural sensitivity to supernatural forces and act as calm, disciplined intermediaries between the mundane world and the unknown.

It is said within the Bureau that "the OC sees everything first – and understands it last." A position of risk, learning, and sometimes terror, the role marks the beginning of a life lived in the shadow of the inexplicable.

Qualifications

Unlike conventional Police Constables, Occult Constables do not receive their foundational training on the streets. Instead, all recruits must complete a four-month internal induction programme at the Chapter House, the Bureaus headquaters in London.

During this period, trainees receive core instruction in:

  • Criminal law and magical legislation
  • Basic arcane theory and symbolic literacy
  • Handling of enchanted artefacts and post-mortem protocols
  • Psychological resilience and first aid

Each recruit’s magical affinity is assessed and closely monitored throughout their training. While active spellcasting is not expected at this level, the ability to perceive, interpret, and withstand arcane phenomena is critical. The programme also explores whether the individual’s sensitivity to the arcane can be further developed through structured exposure.

Successful completion of this induction is required for formal appointment as an Occult Constable. Advancement beyond the rank of Senior Occult Constable is contingent upon demonstrable growth in arcane capacity and ritual competence.

Requirements

Candidates for appointment as an Occult Constable must meet both conventional and arcane eligibility criteria, reflecting the Bureau’s dual mandate of public order and metaphysical regulation.

Minimum requirements include:

  • Aged 21 years or older at the time of application
  • A minimum height of 5 feet 7 inches (170 cm)
  • Good physical health and demonstrable mental stability
  • No criminal record; must be of good moral standing and reputation
  • Proficient in reading and writing (English and Classical Runes preferred)
  • Must demonstrate at least a sensitivity to magical presence, or an innate affinity for arcane phenomena

While formal magical training is not a prerequisite, all candidates must undergo Bureau-administered aptitude assessments, including exposure to mild ritual residue, empathic resonance tests, and a supervised séance (non-possessive class).

Applicants are expected to possess a calm disposition, a degree of personal gravitas, and a tolerance for the inexplicable. A strong stomach is considered advantageous.

Duties

As the most junior rank within the Occult Felony Bureau, an Occult Constable is expected to uphold the dignity and authority of the Bureau in the public eye, even in the face of confusion, fear, or disbelief. While still undergoing professional and arcane development, an OC must maintain composure, discretion, and loyalty — not only to the chain of command, but to the unseen principles upon which the Bureau stands.

Occult Constables are often the first point of contact between civilians and the supernatural. As such, they are morally obliged to:

  • Project calm authority in unsettling circumstances.
  • Treat victims (living or otherwise) with respect.
  • Refrain from speculation, gossip, or sensationalism.
  • Report signs of magical corruption or psychological strain — in themselves or others.
  • Uphold the Bureau’s ritual code of conduct, even when not directly supervised.

It is often said that an OC learns two things quickly:
how to stand straight under weight — and when to look away in silence.

Responsibilities

Occult Constables (OCs) form the lowest operational rank within the Occult Felony Bureau. Their duties mirror those of a regular Police Constable, with additional training in handling arcane disturbances and evidence. They patrol the streets alongside conventional officers, particularly in areas prone to spiritual unrest, illegal ritual activity, or suspected occult influence.

Typical responsibilities include:

  • Responding to public reports of magical disturbances or anomalous behaviour.
  • Securing crime scenes where occult elements are suspected.
  • Assisting with minor field rituals (e.g. ward setting, sigil tracing, banishment containment).
  • Transporting enchanted or dangerous artefacts under supervision.
  • Supporting interrogations involving magically resistant suspects or post-mortem witnesses.
  • Documenting and tagging arcane evidence for necro-forensic analysis.

While not licensed to perform high-grade rituals or spiritual extraditions, OCs are expected to possess basic magical affinity and remain vigilant for signs of supernatural interference. They are the eyes and ears of the Bureau on the street — and often the first to suffer the consequences of what they cannot yet understand.

Accoutrements & Equipment

Occult Constables are issued both standard Metropolitan Police equipment and a number of specialist tools designed to aid in the identification, documentation, and initial containment of supernatural phenomena.

Standard police issue includes:

  • A regulation truncheon
  • A high-pitched whistle (tonally distinct from that of a regular PC)
  • A portable oil lamp for low-visibility patrols
  • A government-stamped field notebook for witness statements and arcane observations

In addition to this, each OC is equipped with a basic occult field kit, calibrated to their individual affinity and operational district. These may include:

  • Blessed chalk for warding circles and evidence marking
  • A scrying mirror or reflective surface (glass, silver or obsidian)
  • A protective charm, issued by the Bureau
  • A sealed envelope containing ritual emergency instructions, to be opened only under dire circumstances

Uniform regulations are strict: OCs must wear the OFB service uniform during all patrols and public appearances. The design emphasises ceremonial posture over comfort and features the twelve-rayed golden sun on the left breast — a symbol often mistaken for a compass rose, but with far older significance.
