The Shattering of Ranios
Summary
Ranios was once a god of a single mind. He was a trickster, often interfering in the conflicts of the founders. Having escaped the mortal realm into his own world, he has spent time sending incursions into the mortal realm, entertaining himself with the activities of mortals.
When the Vimali raided these lands influenced by Ranios, he joined the Empire of Man in fighting them off, worried about the effect Musmizh might have on his own realm. When the Vimali attacked, the fey proved a troublesome group, but the undead outnumbered them. As the fey began to die, the Vimali raised them from the dead, trapping their souls in pieces of the necromantic crystals. To the Vimali's surprise, their attempts to raise the fey from the dead failed. Though they came back to life, they were different. Changed. The Vimali could not control these fey like they could other undead, and they started to fight against everyone else involved. This started to affect more than just the fey. Ranios had changed, too. His mind had started to split apart, fracturing in two, his realm mirroring this.
When the battle ended with the Empire of Man's defeat and the Vimali's takeover of the lake, they found it difficult to maintain their hold on the southern parts of the forest. A new war had started between the now divided Fey: the Court of Joy and the Court of Sorrow, neither of whom wanted the Vimali to occupy their land. The Sorrow Court relies on the existence of Musmizh to convert ever more fey into their court, while the Joy Court tries to destroy any Musmizh they find to release the souls of their dead and allow them to properly return to Ranios to be revived as what they consider "true fey". Their dominions also cause other mortals entering them to feel similar emotions.
With the appearance of Mivesen and his artificials came an attempt to repair the rift that was caused in Ranios's mind. Since artificials do not experience emotion in the same manner as other beings, they are able to enter the fey forests and even Ranios's domain without being affected by it as much. As they entered Ranios's realm and tried to restore order, they influenced his lands in unforeseen ways, giving rise to a third region of his realm. The inhabitants of this realm became known as the Court of Order, and the machines that led to its creation were changed in myriad ways as a result, taking on more otherworldly, fey-like appearances. It is unknown whether Mishon resides among these machines or is elsewhere
