Issthyr

Issthyr is the capital of the The Duchy of Savassan. Its construction began long ago, before many other races of the world, and actually began with the construction of the palace. It is said Savassan built it as his personal home before passing it on to successors at his time of death, and the city slowly formed around it. As such, those on the outskirts are generally considered the lower class while people in the center of the city are the wealthier nobility.

Demographics

The population of Issthyr is actually somewhat varied, but a lot of halflings, gnomes, half-elves, and elves live there. The nobility of the Kingdom is fairly large, entirely comprised of elves. Most of the halflings who live in Issthyr have modest jobs or farms outside of the city, and gnomes generally manage businesses, acting as accountants or financiers for them. Half-elves have the most varied positions in the economy of Issthyr. The city's center, around the palace, is where its wealthiest citizens live, while its poorest citizens live outside of the walls.

Government

The city's governance is left up to the Queen, who manages its daily affairs, its economy, and its laws. A special hall is reserved in the palace for the Queen to handle such affairs separately from the King's management of national affairs. The Queen can also appoint advisors from the nobility to aid in these tasks.

Defences

Built right at a convergence between two rivers, Issthyr has a natural moat that protects it from the west, south, and east. Aggressors are highly unlikely to come from the north, so the city has a great defensive boon. The twin bridges pose a defensive issue, as invaders can storm both at once, but defensive walls on the eastern bank, closest to the city, help to alleviate some of this risk.

Industry & Trade

Much of the trade emerging from Issthyr involves river fishing and similar industry while farms around the city also provide a boost to the economy. All trade that happens outside of the Kingdom ultimately returns to Issthyr before being redistributed. Much of this trade is now outsourced to Antonesse, making it the largest trade hub in the Kingdom.

Infrastructure

The roads leading into Issthyr converge over the top of a river, on top of which two bridges have been built. These have come to be known as the Twin Bridges, as their designs are identical and they were built at the same time. The city has a rudimentary sewer system that really only supports the palace and the homes of some nobles. There is a lot of river-based industry in Issthyr, and as such watermills and river fishing and travel have become quite important.

Districts

Houses built around the palace make a near-perfect ring, and much of the city's nobility lives in this ring. Often called the Gold Ring, this district is well-guarded and most of it is only accessible to those who live in it. A small gap in the ring makes room for the end of the main road, leading up to the courtyard and entrance to the palace. Outside of this, the organization of buildings gets messier. Markets, taverns, and workshops fill the landscape, providing easy centralized access for all classes in the city. Beyond this market district, lower-end taverns and residential areas make up the rest of the city. A small section of the market district cuts through these residences and right up to the city's main entrance at the end of the Twin Bridges.
