Cassian Stormfall

Captain Cassian Stormfall (a.k.a. "Kraken's Maw")

"The sea don’t choose kings, nor do I. The only law I answer to is the tide—and it takes no bribes."     Brief Overview   Cassian “Kraken’s Maw” Stormfall was not born a pirate, but he became one by choice. Originally hailing from the port city of Inari on the western coast of Kozuka, he was once known by a different name—one tied to a respected merchant family. When tragedy struck, Cassian cast aside his old identity, taking the name he is known by today to spare his family from disgrace.   At 19 years old, he founded the Tidesworn, a pirate crew bound not by greed, but by loyalty and honor. Over the years, he built Anchor Port, a free-floating city where no king’s rule reaches, and where those who refuse to kneel can find a home. Unlike his rival Orlann “Black Tide” Veskar, Cassian does not lead through fear—he leads through trust.   Cassian believes in freedom, adventure, and the right to carve one’s own path, but his past failures haunt him, driving him to protect those who follow him at any cost. He is a man torn between the thrill of the unknown and the weight of responsibility, a pirate with the soul of a wanderer and the heart of a leader.

Personal history

Birth & Kozukan Upbringing   Cassian was born Kaizen Arashi-no-Kai to a wealthy merchant family in Inari, Kozuka. His father was a respected shipmaster, and his mother was a navigator, making seafaring his birthright.   He was groomed to take over the family trade, expected to live a life of careful deals and measured risks. But Kaizen craved adventure, drawn to storm-chasing sailors and forbidden pirate tales.     The Death of His Younger Brother & His Exile (439 AEL, Age 19)   Cassian’s greatest failure was his younger brother’s death—an event that changed his fate forever.   His brother, Renshiro, idolized him, sneaking aboard a ship bound for dangerous waters. When a storm struck and raiders attacked, Cassian was unable to save him. Overcome with grief and shame, he abandoned his family name and fled Kozuka, taking the name Cassian Stormfall.   His exile was self-imposed, but he has never returned, nor spoken of his past to his crew.   Becoming a Pirate & Founding the Tidesworn (439 AEL, Age 19)   After leaving Kozuka, Cassian gathered his first crew—a mix of shipwrecked survivors, outcasts, and dreamers.   They swore an oath to the tide, vowing to live free and die free. This became the Tidesworn, and their name spread across the Arashi Depths.   Cassian built his reputation on trust, refusing to rule with fear or cruelty.   The Rivalry with Orlann Veskar   Cassian and Orlann both founded their crews in the same year (439 AEL), but their paths diverged.   Orlann conquered—Cassian protected. Their first battle (452 AEL) ended in stalemate, but sealed their lifelong rivalry. While Orlann seeks control, Cassian fights to keep the seas free.   Building Anchor Port (457 AEL, Age 29)   Cassian dreamed of a city where no king, no sultan, no navy could claim rule.   He started with scrap ships and cast-off hulls, lashing them together. Against all odds, Anchor Port grew, becoming a refuge for outcasts and free sailors.   Now, it stands as a testament to his will, but it is always under threat.

Education

Master Navigator – Cassian can read the stars better than most Kozukan scholars.   Storm Tactician – He has an uncanny ability to predict the sea’s moods.   Swordmaster – Trained in Kozukan dueling, but fights like a pirate—dirty and fast.   Polyglot – Fluent in Kozukan, Common, and multiple sailor dialects.

Accomplishments & Achievements

Founded the Tidesworn at age 19.   Defied Orlann Veskar multiple times without losing his crew.   Established Anchor Port, a floating free city.   Brokered peace between rival pirate factions.   Rescued over a hundred enslaved sailors from the Dominion of Kafka.

Failures & Embarrassments

The Death of His Brother – Cassian’s greatest shame, the reason he left Kozuka.   The Stormwake Betrayal (462 AEL) – A Kozukan admiral he trusted betrayed him, costing the lives of several Tidesworn.   The Lost Fleet of 469 AEL – A poorly planned raid resulted in the loss of three ships and dozens of lives.

Morality & Philosophy

Freedom Above All – Cassian believes no man should be bound by chains, whether iron or gold.   Loyalty is Earned – He does not demand fealty, only trust.   Oaths Are Sacred – Betray him, and you will not live long enough to regret it.

Personality Characteristics

Motivation

Cassian sails not for riches, nor for conquest, but for the promise of the unknown. He wants to see every horizon, to push beyond the edge of the map. But more than anything, he is still running—from his past, from his regrets, from the ghost of his brother.

Social

Family Ties

Family: His Kozukan family still lives, but he has not seen them in decades.   Cassian knows he can never go home—but that doesn’t stop him from looking west when the wind is right.

Wealth & Financial state

Wealth: Moderate—wealth never stays in one place when you’re a pirate.
