Western Colonies
Farmers and Science.
Unlike most other Colonial regions, the "West" or Outward always were less desirable to be colonized. Not that the Stars are worse or anything, but things are further apart, less light from the core reaches and the darkness of the endless void between galaxies draws ever closer. Though for some, this is the appeal.
Colonization density is not very high, yet is close to the core and the Central Colonies are extremely secure and comparatively private.
So who goes to a place close to the Central Authority, secure and private? That's right, Research and Development and farmers. In the early years of FTL Colonization the West was just as good as any other direction, directions were still talked to in relation to Earth. Early colonists found soils that were adaptable and could take their crops very well. Quickly the West became known to trade Organics back home, while it wasn't the only thing, it always was one of the most important good for the entire region. At some points in time 2/3's of all trade was with Organics.
As the Threats got bigger and budgets far larger, the Imperial Government Scouted for locations to setup Research Facilities that would be able to conduct their research without having to worry about through traffic and could stay farily hidden without expensive Stealthing. The West has some ideal locations. These Facilities grew and grew.
By now the Geographic makeup of the west is one of extremes. Islands of highly connected well developed and generalized Worlds, self sustaining and highly educated, surrounded by low density, high Organic Production planets.
These Farming world didn't just keep to their soils however. They need to feed World upon worlds of people with organic material. They began with the help of the Newcomers, as they are refered to by the Western Natives, to look upon the multitude of the Jovian worlds and adjusted atmospheres, built gigant spheres around them and turned them into massive, never ending hanging gardens with sheer endless fields of growing and flourshing nature, tending to them sometimes by living there aswell, some others in stations orbiting the Jovian World.
Which leads us neatly into their appearance. The Farmers favored low Gravity worlds and to some degree did the Scientists brought over. Which leads into them being more lanky, less muscular and paler then their breathren from other stars.
