Penance
Penance is the ultimate form of repentance in the face of a horrible crime. Somebody that is under Penance is referred to as a Penitent. More often than not. Penitents are typically worshipers of Aine; as it is a practice commonly done by his faiths across the world.
Penance is unique for each sect; when a criminal wishes to absolve themselves of their crime and they have not been under penance before, they may request to become a penitent under the protection of the Church. Becoming a Penitent is typically reserved only for those who truly show that they wish to find forgiveness in their act, but must be understood that what they've committed to become a penitent is a terrible sin that would normally be deserving of execution. Going under penance is a gambit; should a Penitent commit a crime while they are undergoing penance, they are free to be summarily executed by any witnesses.
Penance begins in three steps.
Confessional
Penance is requested by the criminal, whom asks to speak directly to a Priest of Aine. The Priest will hear out their private confessional and determine whether or not their sin can be absolved through becoming a penitent; all details divulged during the making of a penitent are kept private, as is traditional for confessionals. Even the Vanks, who uniquely emphasis public confessionals over private ones, will often keep the identities of the Penitents hidden. The Masking
A new identity is granted to the penitent, along with a special mask to obscure their identity. The mask of penance both hides their identity and marks them as penitent. Furthermore, a new name is granted to the Penitent so that they may keep their identity hidden. Masks are easily identified as steel, heavy masks with simple eyeholes -- metal holes are poked into the mouth area to allow for easier speech and breathing. Typically, they are also given special rags that allow them to further hide their identity. Newer lengths may be taken to further keep their true self hidden; such as shaving hair.Life under Penance
Living as a Penitent is living with the expectation to carry out basic tasks for their community. These vary, but the task is given to them by the priest. Typically, Penitents will live unpaid, but are offered room and lodging under the Church.
