Asteria

The Asteria is a race that came from the east during the Koi exodus and has signs of their presence on Vesax in the ancient ages. All Asteria include strange and otherworldly features including six fingers on each hand, a tall yet lithe form, digitigrade legs, a tail and strange luminescent markings that appear only in the darkness.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Most Asteria reach between 7-9' feet tall with thin lithe bodies. However going by older Asteria, the race has no known ending point for height as elder Asteria average 11-12' and the ancient Asteria are closer to 15 feet.
All Asteria have hands with six fingers although some elder and ancient Asteria have two thumbs rather than an extra finger. It's unknown if this is a change caused by age or if this is a recessive trait in newer generations.
Asteria legs are digitigrade with clawed five-toed feet. Opscuritas tend to have slightly longer and sharper claws.
While in sunlight the Asteria have indented markings that trace along their skin in odd yet graceful patterns, it is in the dark that these markings begin to glow with strange bioluminescence, turning a bright blue for Astrum and a deep red for Opscuritas.
Like the markings for the respective sub-species, both the hair and eyes carry this bioluminescence.

Genetics and Reproduction

Since the Asteria are a hermaphrodite race, all members are capable of carrying and siring children, however, birth rates are extremely low with only 1-3 children being born a decade among the whole race.
Gestation takes about 2 years.

Growth Rate & Stages

First fifty years: Child
50 -100: Adolescent
100-500: Young Adult
500-5000: Adult (begins to grow horns)
5000-9000: Elder
9000+: Ancient

Ecology and Habitats

Asteria are most comfortable in cooler wet environments with little to no sunlight.

Dietary Needs and Habits

The Astrum Asteria are pure herbivores and incapable of digesting meat. The Astrum must eat stones periodically to help with digestion.
In contrast, the Opscuritas Asteria are purely carnivorous and unable to digest vegetation.
In the event one were to eat the others diet, they will result in severe illness and sometimes death unless the food is purged quickly.

Additional Information

Social Structure

While Asteria will often adopt the social structures of where they live, it's still assumed that they will take the words of elders under consideration when making decisions or actions. It's also assumed that the words of ancients are to be taken as law, however as the two ancients tend to contradict one another this can cause issues and a slight splitting culturally.

Facial characteristics

Asteria facial structure is similar to elves but slightly longer and slimmer with longer ears. Additionally, they have no pores resulting in an unnaturally smooth face.
Both types of Asteria have long sharp teeth but Opscuritas's teeth tend to be somewhat longer and have small serrations along the sides.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

The Asteria have incredible eyesight in the dark but often find themselves getting dazed and confused if under bright light for too long.
One of the strange differences between Astrum and Opscuritas is that the Astrum seem to be unable to see the colour red, instead seeing black.

Civilization and Culture

Naming Traditions

Asteria rarely are named at birth and are instead named when they achieve a notable feat or profession. Some may remain nameless for several centuries and names can often change, and in rare cases be stripped for committing major crimes.
Examples include: Baker, Graceful dancer, Bright glow, Smith, Elf-friend

Gender Ideals

As the Asteria only have one gender they themselves have no defined gender roles and are typically confused by groups that do.

Courtship Ideals

Most Asteria are very forward with romantic and sexual requests with Astrum being the most forward. Opscuritas tend to be more direct with their requests, rarely bothering with flirting, however, they are far less likely to pursue any form of short term relationship.

Relationship Ideals

Among the Asteria, it's commonplace and encouraged to have multiple partners at a time in order to increase the odds of children being born. It can be considered prestigious to have a large number of partners in longterm relationships.

Major Language Groups and Dialects

While they will go out of their way to ensure they learn the local language, the Asteria are known for a previously unknown dialect of Primordial that many call Noctisal.

Common Dress Code

Asteria clothes tend to be made to fit odd, almost aquatic patterns, though they are split depending on whether the Asteria is a follower of Caretake or Warrior.
Those that follow caretaker tend to dress in cloth and fabrics made from plant fibre or silk that form robes in light patterns.
Those that follow Warrior tend to wear animal hide and bone jewellery with intricate carvings.
Both sides tend to be very lightly covered and minimal modesty.

Common Customs, Traditions and Rituals

It's normal for Opscuritas Asteria to be separated from their parents at birth to be trained as a warrior and protector of the Asteria, among the Followers of Caretaker this is followed extremely closely and Opscuritas are guaranteed to live like this as long as they live with the Caretaker. The Astrum among caretakers group typically fill any nonaggressive roles and live somewhat more relaxed lives.
Among the Asteria that live around Warrior, the Opscuritas are given the chance to pursue other professions as long as they can guarantee they will be ready to fight should the worse come to pass. Warrior will also train and empower Astrum that wish to pursue fighting aswell.

History

During the event of The Tear, a number of creatures and species were displaced on the material plane, one of these creatures was the Asteria. The Asteria came from what is often referred to as the Twilight Plane, however, it is believed that this plane was one of the planes to collapse resulting in the Asteria being trapped here.
During the early days on the Material Plane, the Asteria lived on the east coast of Vesax in modern-day Donze and Othrin. They spent their first years relatively untouched until slavers began to target the race for their large size and exotic appearances. As the race was extremely passive, this slavery of the race went for several years until retaliation from Warrior. After this, the race began to divide itself with whether to follow Warriors' example or not.
It took several years for the groups to once again to begin to cooperate and unite under the two leaders of Warrior and Caretaker. Once these two groups came back together they decided the land they were is was far too dangerous and created vessels to sail to a new land.
After leaving Vesax they came to what many call the Forgotten Isle, a large island in between Vesax and the Eastern Continent. While on the Isle, the Asteria found the island already populated with humans, orcs, lizardfolk, and Samsarans. While the Asteria cared little for the humans and were often at odds with the orcs and lizardfolk, they found the Samsarans as good friends as both races felt the change of time different from other races.
It was many thousands of years before the Asteria encountered people from off-island, these first strangers were refugees of the East war between the Sanu and the Koi confederacy. The first thing the Asteria found with the refugees was the ships they used were nearly falling apart and rampant with famine as these ships were made for coastal and short oceanic trips, the Asteria however still had the designed of their ships and assisted the refugees in building these ships.
The primary reason the refugees couldn't stay on the isle was the upcoming eruption of the volcano of the island that would destroy much of the island. Soon the Asteria joined the refugees and Samsarans on the new ships towards the land the Ancient Asteria came from. During the Journey, Warrior and Caretaker acted as guides since they were the only two Asteria left from when the race came to Vesax.

Interspecies Relations and Assumptions
