Duke / Duchess
Qualifications
This family title is hereditary, but in order to be eligible for the proper title and become the Duke or Duchess, instead of just of the family, the inheritor must go through detailed instruction on administration, accounting, history, war, and politics. Once a protege is believed to be ready for the position, they will go through a partial passing of the title and observation period lasting a minimum of two years. Should they be found ready, they will be named the Duke or Duchess Apparent, and are considered qualified to take over the position whenever the need should arise.
Requirements
To even be eligible for consideration, the person involved must be a member of the Duke or Duchesses family (adoption is allowed), raised by the family within 1 degree of the current duke or duchess from birth or the age of 1. If, for some reason, the child was not raised by the family for the full stretch of that time they are no longer eligible.
Appointment
After completing their training, proteges will be temporarily raised to the rank of Duke for their observation. The King oversees this this ceremony. There is a second ceremony where they are named the Duke or Duchess Apparent by the king should their observation go well. Both of these ceremonies are mandatory, but the ceremony for the original Duke or Duchess abdicating does not require the Kings presence.
