Magic in the world of Verdraxis
Magic is powerful and in the wrong hands it is something to be feared. The common people of Verdraxis see magic and those who practice it as strange and unpredictable. Casting magic in public is often frowned upon and in some places such as the kingdom of Gildengard it is even forbidden. Signs that read "no magic" on the front doors of taverns are a common sight.
Because of this, arcane casters are often reclusive, and adhere to strict self imposed rules in order to protect themselves from the ire of their communities. Wizards in particular take this a step further. In order to protect not only themselves and others of their craft, wizards are known to form guilds, societies, and schools where they can gather and learn from each other. These groups have strict rules that all members must obey least they run the risk of being excommunicated. The most prominent of these organizations is the Ludum Praecontatio, which oversees the practice of magic on all of northern Aetrus.
There are some communities that are less superstitious than others. Anoralfar and forest gnomes are magically inclined and often have spell casters as prominent members of society.
Devine magic is not seen in the same light as the arcane. The idea that clerics and paladins are beholden to a god whom they receive their power from is enough to put people's minds at ease. In this case it's more about the god that the caster worships that is in question.
