Solinar Aurelius Dawnbringer

His Holiness (a.k.a. The Arch-Hierophant of Pelor, Vicar of the Light, Servant of the Servants of the Sun Lord)

The Arch-Hierophant of Pelor, Vicar of the Light, Servant of the Servants of the Sun Lord

Introduction: The Divine Hand of the Sun

Solinar Aurelius Dawnbringer is the first fully realized incarnation of the High Sun-Keeper—the supreme pontiff and Vicar of Pelor across the Flanaess. Unlike traditional high-level NPCs, Solinar is not merely a powerful cleric; he is the living nexus through which Pelor’s mercy, wrath, and judgment flow. Appointed in the year 558 CY, Solinar has reigned as the spiritual sovereign of the Universal Church of the Sun Lord for nearly two decades, guiding the faithful through times of moral twilight and elemental upheaval.

Wherever his presence is felt—be it cathedral, court, or battlefield—light follows, not metaphorically, but manifestly.

Appearance: A Vessel of Unbearable Grace

Solinar is no longer entirely mortal. Years of direct communion with Pelor and bearing the unfiltered truth of divine justice have rendered him both awe-inspiring and terrible.

  • Eyes: Golden irises, radiant yet impersonal, like miniature suns.
  • Hair: A living corona of fine, luminous strands that shift from white-gold to brilliant saffron depending on the hour of the day.
  • Skin: Pale and luminous, with veins of gold visible beneath like divine ley lines.
  • Vestments:
  • Cincture of Dawn: A sash woven of firstlight threads from Elysium, shimmering with living scripture.
  • Robes of Solar Authority: Flowing vestments that flicker with soft sunlight and turn searing in the presence of undeath or divine corruption.
  • Helm of Divine Cognizance: A ceremonial halo of spun crystal that rests above his brow without touching it.

When Solinar speaks, those who lie feel their tongues burn. When he listens, the guilty weep.

Personality: The Burning Mercy

Solinar is neither a detached prophet nor a gentle priest. He embodies the paradox of Pelor: wrath and healing, fire and growth.

  • Merciful, but Unforgiving: He will weep for a sinner—and excommunicate them in the same breath.
  • Supremely Aware: Solinar sees far beyond mortal deception. He views suffering not as a flaw in creation, but as a crucible.
  • Detached from Mortality: Though kind, he no longer speaks in familiar tones. His every gesture is a ritual. Every breath, a homily.
  • Enormous Empathy, Zero Tolerance: He offers redemption to murderers, but cannot abide corruption in clergy.

Background and Rise

Born in a remote village in Veluna in 507 CY, Solinar was the orphan of a fallen knight and a midwife. Raised among Raoan monks, he was known for his unshakable serenity and an uncanny ability to calm others.

At age 16, he entered a Pelorian novitiate in Mitrik, where he reportedly experienced his first direct vision of Pelor during a midsummer ritual. It was said his body remained untouched by flame during a sunfire invocation—a miracle confirmed by the entire College of Cardinals.

Ordained at 21, Solinar advanced quickly through doctrinal orders due to his humility, miracle-working, and theological genius. He was unanimously elected High Sun-Keeper by the Cardinals of Dawn following the death of the previous Vicar in 558 CY.

Divine Powers and Limitations

Divine Communication

Solinar receives his daily spell allotment through direct communion. He does not meditate; instead, he enters solar transfiguration—a meditative trance surrounded by radiant phenomena.

He alone may cast Commune and be assured of true divine response. These communications often come with cryptic vision, prophecy, or emotional ecstasy.

Spellcasting Philosophy

  • Solinar understands—intimately—that divine spells are not tools, but trust.
  • If he sins, they are withdrawn. If the world falters in its virtue, he may be denied the power to act.
  • When casting Raise Dead or Resurrection, he petitions Pelor directly. These acts are miracles, not guarantees.

"It is not I who raise the fallen,” he has said, “but the mercy of the Morning Lord, if it is deserved."

Relationships and Political Reach

Nobility and Monarchs

Solinar is more feared than loved by kings. His blessing may elevate a noble house, and his disapproval may doom a kingdom’s harvest.

  • The Archclericy of Veluna views him as a spiritual sovereign.
  • Furyondy’s King Belvor IV seeks his counsel often, though anxiously.
  • The Pale recognizes his spiritual claim over their land, though politically, they remain independent.

Other Faiths

  • Raoans: Deeply respected; seen as spiritual cousins.
  • Pholtans: Tense rivalry; Solinar’s emphasis on compassion clashes with their rigid purity.
  • Old Faith Druids: Mutually distant, occasionally allied against necromantic threats.

Theological Role in the World

Solinar is the living embodiment of Pelor’s evolving doctrine—the steward of both tradition and divine innovation. His sermons become canon. His failures could spark doctrinal crises.

  • Living Scripture: His recorded visions are compiled into a growing text called the Radiant Testament.
  • Soteriological Evolution: He has introduced the doctrine of “Merciful Judgment”—a controversial belief that even evil souls may be redeemed after death through divine fire.

Footprint in the Flanaess

Solinar’s arrival in a city is considered a miraculous visitation. Fields grow golden, undead slink into shadow, and even fiends sense the pain of grace.

  • He has singlehandedly ended two plagues in Onnwal.
  • He banished a pit fiend beneath a ruined temple in Ratik with only a word and radiant glyph.
  • He rebuked an entire council of corrupt bishops in Almor by simply falling to his knees and weeping—two of them died of guilt within a week.

Final Thoughts

Solinar Aurelius Dawnbringer is not merely a character. He is a pillar of the campaign world, a theological axis around which mortal institutions tremble and realign.

He is not to be used lightly. His presence should be an event, a catalyst, a reminder that in a world of steel and shadow, the light of mercy still burns—and it sees everything.

“You are not judged by what you believe... but by what you would do, had you the power. By Pelor’s light, you do have that power. Now go—and become the morning.”
