Nelkjon-Class Battleship 1919
Ships in class: 4
The Nelkjon-Class began its lengthy design process in 1910, with a new school of thought becoming more common amongst naval officers of the Fog. While doctrine as of 1910 required a sizeable speed advantage over foreign adversaries, this often resulted in uneconomically large designs, or a lack of armor. The new concept eschewed the existing process in favor of armor. Nearly three years of R&D eventually resulted in Design V-19/C being chosen for construction.
Firepower
Armed with the standard Fog battery of 14" rifles, albeit with an improved shell design, the Nelkjons differed mainly in their secondary armament, utilizing slightly larger 4.7" guns in fully enclosed turrets, each firing a heavier shell than the preceding 4.5" secondary battery guns. The total amount of ammunition storage was slightly increased as compared to the preceding classes, with an additional 5 shells for the main battery and at least 20 more for the secondary. Layout for the main battery was rational, with the triple turrets in an A/B/Y scheme. The secondary battery was spread evenly, though mainly around the large superstructure area.
Protection
As armor was the main focus of the design, no degree of protection was left out. The first class to use a so-called "all or nothing" scheme, her belt armor was considered sufficient to defeat any existing naval gun at expected battle ranges. Her deck armor was a major step up from previous designs as well, featuring 5" of vital part protection with a lesser 2.5" elsewhere. Likewise, a torpedo protection system (TPS) was included in the design from the start, using a new system of liquid and void spaces to reduce the impact of a potential hit. A double bottom was also a first of the design for improved resilience against mines and other underwater obstacles.
Propulsion
With several of the current classes in service with the Fog reaching in excess of 28 knots, a moderate decrease was taken in speed to accept greater amounts of armor. 26kts was sufficient for most combat with opposing battlegroups, designers argued, particularly if the ship could withstand repeated hits. A range of 10,000 nautical miles at 13 knots was considered perfectly suitable for a battleship. Power is generated by oil fired turbined coupled to steam turbines, which in turn drive four shafts.
