The Articles

The thirteen articles is what the Free Isles of Fortune Bay base their judication and governance upon. Whilst there are only 13, they are usually interpreted in such a way that they are practically hundreds of actual rules.

Purpose

The thirteen articles sprang from the first council of admirals. They were elected from all the captains of the Free Isles, and together they drafted the laws that govern them.

Document Structure

Clauses

The articles are founded upon the virtues and values respected amongst the crews and traders of The Free Isles. There are only thirteen, but their interpretation divides people, and the interpretation of such on behalf of trespassers are often lucrative positions.

Caveats

Only those who carry their signed charter can participate in captaincy or trade. Crew members will usually write their name in the Ship's book of the crew that they are a part of.

Publication Status

The original articles are written on the preserved skin of a giant shark, but each prospective captain is required to buy and keep a tome containing the articles and the names of all serving members of his crew.

Legal status

The Admiral's Council usually stay out of the affairs of lesser captains, but when called upon to judge disputes amongst captains their word is law.

Historical Details

Background

The Articles were written during the first meeting of the Admiralty of the Free Isles, following their independence from the Althoran colonial powers.

Public Reaction

The original articles, were signed by rulers of all previous colonial powers; The Aruvian Barrow King Jahalis, The Vixen Duchess Nessa, and the Charger Duke Ghoram. Their signing declared the independence of the Free Isles to the world, and to themselves.

Legacy

The document is treasured, and kept behind several layers of security. It is considered the most valuable artefact in all of The Free Isles, and its safekeeping is an venerated position.
