Schools of Magic

The magic of Vana is both physical and spiritual by nature - it is quite literally the very fabric of the universe. Without magic, Vana would cease to exist.
There are many forms of magic in Vana. Some magic is inherent to the world - like spirits. Spirits are all by definition, magical. They're often created or born in areas where certain energies are strongest. Those energies make up the spirit's anatomy and magical prowess. A spirit that formed within a leyline of physical energy, for example, will likely have talents related to primal magic - which is one of the four categories (or schools) of magic. There are many spirits who can cast magic from multiple schools but that is a gift reserved only for them.   Along with spirits, there are animals that are born with certain relation to different magical energies. Flying fennecs, for example, are adorable little tempest sages (sort of). Their ability to fly comes from the wind and air portion of tempest magic. They can also zap other creatures to stun them in order to escape - all within the realm of tempest magic. There are no animals that can cast magic from multiple schools, however. Neither can sages.   However, sages have more magical capabilities than flying fennecs. When a sage is born into a school of magic, they can use all of the spells within that school - which means all of the spells from the subclasses of that school. (Whereas flying fennecs are limited to the magic of only a single subclass).   The four schools of magic are: primal, astral, infernal, and empyreal. Each school of magic has three subclasses. Primal magic is split into the tempest, gaia, and solar subclasses. Astral is split into conjuration, destruction, and enchantment. Infernal is split into necromancy, thaumaturgy, and transmutation. And empyreal is split into divination, abjuration, and restoration.   In relation to one another, the opposite school of primal magic is astral magic. The opposite of empyreal magic is infernal magic. Astral and empyreal magic are considered sister magicks, and primal and infernal are considered sister magicks.

Localization

There are four sage towers on four corners of the world - one for each of the schools of magic. The Eastern Tower houses empyreal sages. The Western Tower houses infernal sages. The Northern tower houses astral sages. The Southern Tower houses primal sages.   Each of these towers were built at the points where the four schools of magic are strongest - ley lines of spiritual energy. That way, sages within those schools are particularly powerful and are extremely capable of defending their towers. This, among other things, prevents the different sage schools from trying to take over one another.
