Sundawn

Each year, on the brightest day of spring, the people of Pluvia gather to celebrate a cherished tradition—a communal planting ritual known as Sundawn, held under cloudless skies. The day is chosen not just for the sun, but for the certainty that no rainfall will arrive, ensuring that no outsider might accidentally wander into the city while it lies exposed to the world.

This is one of the rare times Pluvia is fully awake during dry weather. The ritual is organized by the Pluvia Agricultural Society, but the entire city participates. Every resident contributes in a way that aligns with their talents and energy. Some dig into the rich soil and plant seeds by hand. Others play music, tell stories, cook nourishing food for workers, or supply fresh water from the nearby lakes.

Pluvia holds fast to the belief that labor and care come in many forms, and no role is lesser. Whether through work, joy, or support, all hands are part of the harvest’s beginning.

The planting itself is almost rhythmic—rows formed in patterns passed down through generations, believed to encourage harmony between the crops and the rain that will awaken them. Laughter and song echo through the fields, carried on warm breezes. Painted cloth streamers flutter between trees, and children often weave flowers into each other’s hair.

As the sun begins to dip, the entire city gathers for a long communal dinner. Dishes are shared family-style, and the evening is filled with music, dancing, and stories about past seasons—both the hard ones and the beautiful ones.

Though quiet most of the year, on this day Pluvia blooms out loud.
