Misttail
“If it vanishes, follow. If it lingers, listen.”
Misttail is the name given to a silver-furred, foxlike creature native to the rain-fed forests and slopes surrounding Pluvia. While many Misttails are seen across the Veil’s edge, one in particular—known simply as The Misttail—has become a quiet legend among the people of the city.
It began during a flooding season nearly a century ago, when part of the lower forest swelled with water and the Veil frayed at its edges. A child had gone missing, swept downstream and presumed lost. Searchers found no tracks—only swirling rain and silence.
But then came the Misttail—a silvery blur seen darting across the banks, its paws somehow not disturbing the flooded ground. A witness followed it without thinking. Hours later, the child was found beneath an uprooted tree, half-conscious but alive. And the Misttail was gone.
Symbolism & Status
Since then, sightings of the Misttail have been taken as omens of protection or change. It’s said the creature only appears to those on the edge of something—grief, revelation, danger, or healing.
Children leave offerings of berries or folded veillinen cloth near the trees in hopes of glimpsing it. Artists carve its likeness into doorways. One popular children’s book claims the Misttail "carries the dreams that are too heavy to hold."
While scholars insist that multiple Misttails likely exist, and that memory distorts what’s real, the people of Pluvia don’t mind. Whether spirit or creature, guardian or echo—Misttail belongs to them.
“Don’t chase the Misttail. If it wants you to follow, it’ll wait.”
