Chaos Is Fundamental
Ordell spent centuries debating what Kay had told him about the Chaos Engine. He had the time after all. He did try to ask more questions, but her answers had all been vague. Understandably so, once he knew what she was supposed to be doing. Eventually though, the time finally came. He traveled to Witchaven to find the Chaos Engine, not to take her, but to watch her and know who she might become. This girl who was supposed to be so important to him and to Alton. She was the backbone of the Universe's existence. What he did not expect to find, however, was a war. His original plan had only been to stay for a few days, weeks at most, but he stayed in Witchaven for nearly two years. He found the Chaos Engine, named Aura, rather quickly. Her distinct life energy made her stand out, even as a baby. He also met her mothers, Amanda and Vivian.
The unplanned consequences showed when, in the wake of a stressful escape, he swore to keep them, all three of them, safe. He planned to keep that promise as long he could and did his best to do so. Ordell hid them when Aura's power began to form, and fought the witches who came looking for them. He brought Kay to visit and add extra shields to their home. He tried to visit them as often as possible to help teach Aura and her mothers what he had learned from other Chaos Engines. Despite the danger of the nearby fighting, it seemed as though they would be okay. He should have known it couldn't last. Everything good has to end eventually and it wasn't long before everything began to fall apart around him. Soon it wasn't safe anywhere. He tried to get them out, to Laylovahn and to safety, but it was so far to the gate. Too far. Too far a child who was barely two. Too far for the terrors they had to travel through.
They were nearly there when they found themselves surrounded. Almost thirty witches who had no intention of letting them through. Ordell fought in sync with Aura's mothers, until his shields began to fail and his energy ran out. Until Vivian took a blow to the head and collapsed. Until Amanda was pierced through the stomach by an arrow. Until the only thing he could do was carry Vivian and Aura and try to run while Amanda forced them away. He reached the gateway hours later, only realizing how still Vivian was when he tried to wake her. To tell her they had made it. That he needed her to go through the gateway so he could find Amanda, who had walled herself in with the other witches to keep them from following her wife and child. But she didn't wake up and he couldn't go back. Not when he felt their souls leave the Realm. Not when Aura was still alive and he had a promise to keep. So he went through the gateway himself and brought her to Adeline, in the Capital. Ordell spent months making sure Aura was safe. When Aura was old enough to remember who he was he told her his name was Elluin. He decided, after Aura had called him uncle, that he would try to raise her the best he could, though he couldn't really raise her himself. He taught her to stay true her mothers' beliefs, even if she couldn't remember them herself. He taught her how to control her abilities, the strange ones no one else had. He had her transferred to Don Deshda when he learned the attendant there was Havenian, so she could be around her own kind. Kay also continued to visit, a close friend whenever Aura needed one, though he knew how Kay felt about visiting Aura. How it was looked forward to as much as his visits were. He visited Amanda and Vivian's graves and told them about their daughter, how amazing she was and how proud they would be if they could see her. She became a skilled magic user, one to rival the ancients. An amazing achievement, and a necessary one. It was only a matter of time before her story really began, after all.
