Dream
"A Dream is a world where event after event occur in succession without sensible transition. Often, they are nothing - but one should always keep watch for those on either extreme, lest they become complacent."
-Thomas Pennington, leader of the Druidic Circle of Dreams
A Dream is a powerful incantation that can be used to communicate with almost anyone via their sleeping unconscious. Most often, they are used as ways of metaphysical meeting; a Dream can take any form within the imagination of the caster. In other circumstances, the Dream is used as a weapon or form of torture. A person with enough of a vendetta can direct nightmares towards those who have earned their ire, forcing them into long periods of restless sleep or insomnia. The Dream is remembered perfectly upon waking.
Those who freely utilize Dreams - regardless of purpose - are called Dreamwalkers. They can range from Druids to Bards to Wizards.
Effect
Changes from Standard 5e:
- A Dream can be sent across planes of existence. However, unless the Dream is upcast at 7th level, it will become warped and disturbing to the targeted creature, of which the caster will not be aware. A Dream presented in this fashion will impose the same effects as the Maligned version of the spell.
- As adult Elves meditate instead of sleep, they cannot receive Dreams from non-Elves and non-Fey unless the spell is upcast at 7th level.
- A Maligned Dream can consist of as many words as the caster wishes, instead of a maximum of 10.
Benign:
A creature affected by Dream will be in direct conversation with the caster in an environment that the caster chooses. Due to the flow of time in Dreams, this can present in any length of time, but the creature cannot awaken for eight hours unless either the messenger ends the Dream or the creature is awakened by a sudden external force.
Malign:
A creature affected by Dream enters a nightmare that the caster put them in. The target must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw, suffering 3d6 psychic damage upon a failure (half upon a success). They also don't receive any benefit from a long rest.
