Character Creation

Creating Your Character

Use the following guidelines for creating a character for the It's Good To Be Evil campaign.

  • You start as a 1st level character, and your character concept should be developed accordingly. You are not an experienced adventurer or a power to your own right. You were at the beginning of your career and cut down before you could even really start. It’s just not fair!
  • Ancestries available to player characters include: dwarf, elf, gnome, goblin, halffoot, kobold, ogre, quickling (what other settings would call “human”). You also select a Culture to go along with it, which determines your starting Languages and grants a starting Lore. You can find more details in Ancestries and Culture.
  • Backgrounds are highly customizable so feel free to tailor whatever you pick to your character, so long as you detail the reasons for each part. In addition to your background, you pick a Branding, based on the crime you were convicted for. The Branding gives you a narrative benefit, but also a General Feat and Skill, though it also has some other less positive effects. For more details, see The Branding.
  • Any class in published Paizo material can be taken. If you intend to take an archetype, or use a Rare or Uncommon option, please ask now, as they will all be subject to DM approval.
  • Your alignment must be Evil. Alignment is an objective force in this universe, relating to how your soul based on your deeds and choices aligns with the cosmic Principles that undergird reality. Lawful Evil is a preference, but you may be Neutral Evil or Chaotic Evil in some circumstances.
  • You will start the game with no equipment, but eventually will be able to equip yourselves with 200 gp worth of equipment. Go ahead and detail what that 200 gp of equipment would be. You can set aside up to 50 of that 200 gp as “pocket money” to receive.
  • For spellcasters like wizards who prepare spells ahead of time, you start the game with spells memorized, but remember that you do not start with spell components or the like.
  • You will need some kind of character art for me to make a token with in Foundry. I have been using Midjourney to generate pictures for NPCs with a unified aesthetic, and would be happy to do the same with you if you give me parameters and points of inspiration to build from.
  • Finally, I need your Dark Calling. Go through Pathfinder's Bestiaries and pick a monster that you feel resonates with your character and the narrative you wish to tell with it. What mechanical effect this has will play out over the game. It may or may not, depending on the character, choice of monster, and how things play out, involve a gradual transformation into such a monster.
