Dragons of Uria

Dragons live all over the world, with different types of dragons living in different environments and niches. They are one of the more potent sources of magic in the world and can channel their magic into various breath weapons as well as the ability to fly despite their heavy weight. Dragons resemble winged reptiles, with varying physical characteristics and traits. The smallest dragon in the world is about the size of a pony, while the largest known dragon is bigger than a fully grown rock whale.

Common Drake

The common drake is the only known flightless dragon in Uria. Thanks to it’s densely forested habitat the species de-evolved to have tiny wings and a very panther-like way of hunting. It is always the dominant predator wherever it lives, and DragonKnights stationed in areas too dense for flyovers will often ride this particular species of dragon.

Deep-Sea Dragon

Along with being the only completely aquatic dragon species, they are also the largest. Deep-sea dragons feed on deep sea creatures, and emerge only to gulp in a huge breath of air that can last them many hours. They sometimes attack ships, mistaking them for stray whales. These dragons have evolved some bioluminescence in their barbles and what remains of their wings. No one has ever ridden a Deep Sea Dragon due to how hard they are to find and keep near the surface. They are not known to be territorial, instead continuously migrating along with their food. They are certainly a sight to behold. When hunting they have been known to drive schools of fish to the surface, causing a wave of fish and scales to burst up into the air and come raining back down. When these feeding frenzies occur closer to land, it can cause massive waves to crash towards nearby villages, flinging the things of the deep up onto the sand. For starving villagers the unexpected wave of stranded marine life can be a blessing, so the damage to the landscape and buildings is usually forgiven.

Deep-sea dragons are coloured much like their shallow-watered cousins the oceanic dragons. With pale underbellies and dark-blues and greens on top. The young of these species are often mistaken for their cousins due to this colouring similarity. However, many of the older dragons appear to lose their colouring over time, leading to the oldest ones appearing as a cloudy white.

Grassland Dragon

These are the soaring gliders of the dragon world, able to stay in the air the longest of any dragon species. They live in wide-open plains and savannas. They are the palest in colour, usually white or pale blue underneath, and a light gold, bronze or green on top.

Mountain Dragon

A smaller dragon species thanks to the cold climate and forested areas it lives in. These dragons live alone thanks to the scarcity of prey in mountains, and they are quite territorial, among the fiercest of dragons. This makes them among the hardest to ride.

Oceanic Dragon

One of the larger dragon species, these dragons live near coastlines and feed solely on ocean life such as fish, whales, sharks, etc. Their colouring is often like a shark’s, with pale underbellies and darker tops in grey, blue, black, and green.

These dragons will often hunt by soaring above the water and then trucking in their wings and diving down to catch their prey. But are also known to swim underwater and hunt much like a school of dolphins.

Ocean dragons are among the friendliest and easiest to train thanks to the fact that they live in family groups and are not as territorial as their relatives.

Purple Dragon

Not a true species, the purple dragon is only known to occur when a dragon is forcibly hatched using magic. Because of how new this dragon type is, it is incredibly rare, and not much is known about it. Theoretically any species of dragon can become a purple dragon.

They are often more intelligent than their counterparts, with multiple breath weapons and other odd abilities thanks to the additional magic that has been put into their systems. It is still unknown whether or not they can cast verbal spells.

Sandpiper Dragon

These smaller dragons live in the hot deserts of Psammos. They tend to sleep the day away under the cool sand and then hunt at night when the temperature drops. They have a very melodious voice they use to communicate with each other over the vast distances between their territories. Sandpiper dragons migrate to the centre of the desert once every five years for a the breeding season.

Sandpipers will eat almost anything from a lizard to a cactus. They like to burrow underground to escape the heat of the sun, and with their sandy-gold scales they often blend into the landscape so completely that most creatures do not notice them until they burst out of the sand and trap their surprised prey under talon.
