Dark Anchor

Dark Anchors are not simply locations where the Dark manifests; they represent breaches in reality where the boundary between the mundane world and the Dark has collapsed. Through these breaches, the Dark exerts its influence upon the physical world without mediation or restraint. An Anchor may manifest as a person, a ruin, or an otherwise unremarkable location, but its defining characteristic is permanence. Once established, it serves as a stable gateway through which the Dark extends its presence. In the vicinity of an Anchor, light diminishes, spatial perception becomes unreliable, and the presence of the Dark is overt and persistent. Unlike magic or mana, the Dark is neither channeled nor shaped; it intrudes, contaminates, and erodes all surrounding structures.

Dark Anchors are wounds that never close.

Doctor Adrian Lee Korr

Most Dark Anchors originate from Tuners, defined as humans whose prolonged exposure to the Dark—often intensified by trauma and isolation—has eroded their resistance until no barrier remains. At this stage, the individual transitions from merely hosting the Dark to becoming a fixed point of entry, effectively serving as a living threshold. Some Anchors arise independently of human involvement, forming in locations marked by intense suffering, collapse, or metaphysical instability; however, these occurrences are rare and not well understood. Regardless of their origin, Dark Anchors have catastrophic consequences. They distort reality, attract violent Dark entities, and propagate corruption throughout the surrounding environment. If left unchecked, an Anchor poses not only a threat to individual lives but also to the structural integrity of the world itself.

Dark Threat

A Dark Anchor constitutes a persistent and escalating threat, not only due to the entities that traverse it, but also because of the fundamental changes it imposes. The fabric of reality surrounding an Anchor deteriorates as the Dark spreads outward, eroding physical structures, destabilizing psychological states, and altering the governing principles of the affected area. Dark creatures are instinctively attracted to these locations, emerging with violence and without restraint, while individuals in proximity experience paranoia, despair, and a collapse of identity as the Dark encroaches upon their thoughts. In contrast to transient manifestations, an Anchor does not dissipate over time; instead, it expands, intensifying its influence and converting adjacent spaces into extensions of the Dark. If not contained, a single Dark Anchor can gradually transform an entire district into hostile terrain, not through abrupt destruction, but through persistent and insidious unraveling.

Closing the Anchor

The closure of a Dark Anchor is neither a straightforward nor reversible process, as an Anchor constitutes a rupture rather than a discrete object that can be sealed. The only consistently effective approach involves the complete severance of the Dark’s connection to the world at the affected site. This typically necessitates the destruction of the Anchor’s core, whether that core is a Tuner whose identity has merged with the breach or a location so saturated that it has become self-sustaining. Achieving this outcome requires overwhelming force, stringent containment protocols, or the application of metaphysical counterpressure sufficient to expel the Dark beyond the boundary it has breached. Even when closure is achieved, residual effects persist, including areas of dead space, ongoing instability, or permanent exclusion zones where reality remains irreparably altered. Efforts at partial sealing or control are invariably unsuccessful, as the Dark cannot be safely redirected or contained. An Anchor can only be ended through erasure, not by restraint.

Harvesting Dark

The extraction of Dark from Anchors involves significant risk and is typically undertaken only by entities prepared to accept catastrophic losses as an operational cost. Since an Anchor functions as a rupture rather than a container, any attempt to extract Dark requires direct engagement with an active breach instead of simply removing a resource. Harvesting operations are generally conducted at the periphery of an Anchor’s influence, where condensed Dark phenomena may be siphoned or temporarily stabilized using specialized containment lattices, sacrificial substrates, or living intermediaries. Even under controlled conditions, this process accelerates environmental destabilization and increases the likelihood of Anchor expansion or secondary rupture. Personnel engaged in harvesting rapidly develop resonance symptoms, psychological deterioration, and, in some cases, irreversible alignment. As a result, Dark harvesting is not considered a sustainable practice but rather a short-term exploitation strategy that sacrifices future containment integrity for immediate gains in power, materials, or knowledge.
