Mechanus
The precise nature of Mechanus is one of the great mysteries pondered by planar scholars, and most of what is known is hotly debated. All agree that it is composed of vast interlocking mechanical gears in perpetual motion, and that it is the home of Primus, and the origin of the Modrons, Inevitables, and Warforged. Whether it is an Inner Plane, a Shroud demesne, or something else entirely remains up for debate, as does almost everything else about the plane and its master.
Geography
Mechanus is a seemingly (or actually, according to some scholars) endless plane (or possibly demiplane or demesne) or enormous, perpetually moving gears suspended in breathable air by unknown means. The gears range in size, with the largest being estimated at several thousand miles in diameter, while others are too small to be seen by the naked eye. The most populous beings in Mechanus are the Modrons, who maintain the great (and minuscule) cogs, and are occasionally dispatched to enforce cosmic law (or fulfil Primus' own ends, according to some). Other notable inhabitants are the Inevitables, such as the Maruts, and a handful of Warforged.
History
According to Teghneist teaching, Mechanus, being created by the Solar Primus, is one of the three Solaric planes, and an Inner Plane. Teghneists believe that, in addition to ensuring the maintenance of the natural order, Mechanus is a stabilising force necessary to counteract the chaotic influences of both the Feywild and the Abyss on the Prime material Plane. Followers of the Colossean Pantheon reject this view, as do most Shroud Worshipers. Most believe that Mechanus is a demiplane or demesne within the Shroud, and that Primus is either a Shrouded One, or a powerful construct of some kind, possibly both.
