THE VOID
Not many have ever stepped foot in the void, even less have ever made it out. Those who have lived tell a horrifying tale, if they can bare the sights they bore witness to, or hold any semblance of sanity in their fragile minds any more.
Where do bodies go after they decay? Where do the flakes of shriveled plants go? Where do the sunken islands and burned forests go? Where do the rocks of mountains split in two by earthquakes go? The void is the culmination of everything broken. The void preserves history, the memory of all that once was. The void is an unending plane, beyond the laws of phsyics and life. Empty space makes up most of this dimension, an endless abyss of darkness and cold.
There is no Sun. There is no Moon. There are no Gods. There are no Stars. The void is nothing. The void is everything. Eternal and finite. Everywhere at once, yet nowhere all the same. At the end of time, it will still be there, just as it was before the beginning.
The void is lonely.
The void is alive.
Geography
The Void is the culmination of all. Forests, lakes, arctics, coral forests, dunes, hills, mountains, ruined cities, caves, ravines, plains, mesas, everything is here. Except, extremely broken. Think the out-of-bounds areas in a videogame; how they can range from planes of flat nothingness that span on for eternity, or broken and ragged terrain half-developed and dangerous to walk on. You never know where you'll end up.
It's suspected that there are "levels" to the void that can be accessed through falling through unstable or building terrain, but the logic of how this works and if they even exist are unknown as of now.
Ecosystem
Because the void is ever changing and morphing, there's lots of "migration" and intermingling. Nothing in the Void is the same, and so there's no particular borders between climates, and by extension, species. They consider each other one, and there is rarely ever any environmental disturbances, because there is no need for it. The Voidlings do not need sleep, food, or hydration for reasons unexplainable. The Void's atmosphere seems to fulfill all their needs, and so there's no need for omnivore or herbivore species to feast on plants. Unless too big for their environment, you don't typically find voidlings in the "skies" or the "water." Pools of water are left to the leviathans, and aquatic species have no problems breathing the "air" of the void. Avians are usually hopping on ground-level, as you never quite know what enormous chimera is gliding about that need that space. Voidlings are very considerate of their environment, and do their best to not disrupt or destroy anything.
Ecosystem Cycles
N/A.
Some species do follow hibernation cycles if the DNA is prominent enough, but this is both inconsistent at timing and no guarantee. The Void have no weather cycles, and the flow of time is also greatly disrupted, so whatever triggers hibernation instincts is unknown. There's a theory that when the void rips open pockets into the world, it may trigger these instincts, but this is unknown and untested.
Localized Phenomena
- Nobody knows how or why the thin layer of "snow" spawns.
Climate
The climate of the void is extremely cold, at all times. There is no Sun to give off warmth, nor any equator. As an endless plane of essentially pitch black darkness, there is no warmth. That said, there are no weather events either. There are no clouds nor wind.
There is a thin layer of something akin to snow that lays upon the floor of the void. While it doesn't seem to be snow, it has very similar properties. How it's formed is unknown.
Fauna & Flora
The void can, and does, manifest into physical beings. These beings are the only creatures that live in the void. They've been dubbed the "Guardians of the Void", "Children of the void," and "Voidlings.".
Natural Resources
The Void is a culmination of all, and not just the planet of Unfao.
Everything and anything can be found here. From dirt to the rarest gemstones, wool and cotton to fruits and vegetables, even some very unnatural, man-or-alien-made resources. All of these resources are tainted however, and mostly unrecognisable. Exposure to the void slowly blackens everything within, and this includes the resources that spawn within.
History
Very little is known about the Void. When was it formed? What formed it? Will it ever go away? How does it function? These are all questions the few who know of its' existence ask. Whatever the void is, it is living. The Void breathes, and gives life to creatures of unimaginable horrors. One could even say it's a grotesque museum. Not only that, the Void has been around for an eternity. It was the antithesis to the Star's ever-present light, and may have even been around longer than they have been. It may have been there since, or before the beginning of time, seeing as "time" is a concept foreign to it.
Nobody knows quite sure when it was "discovered", either. The Void seems to be the source of all anomalies in the universe, the rips in time and space and gateways to other hostile universes. It's suspected the Gods knew of its existence, and that they had spent many millenia holding it back. However, once it begun to break through their defenses, the Gods fled and placed their beloved universe under quarantine in hopes the Void would consume only it, and never breach the surface.
Nobody knows if this is true, though. Maybe the Gods never knew what was lurking beneath the surface of their utopia. Maybe they were terrified of it... maybe it is even stronger than they are. Why else would they flee?
But it's all just theories. Less than 30 people know it exists, more people know of the anomalies than the source. The first time it was discovered, and "explored" by mortals, was the year 6051. The Council sent their best spies into the void to learn more about it. They breached the Void through a large pocket of anomalies that had consumed a warehouse, and was beginning to swallow up an entire forest. It was the worst mistake they had ever made. They were ambushed. They were attacked by monsters beyond even their comprehension. One of them even turned on their friends. Eleven went in. Eleven went missing. Four have been found.
The Council hesitate to step foot into the void now, now that Lady Kyu and the Overlord have lost their sons.
They do not know if they will ever recover from a tragedy of this scale. If the Void rivals the power of the Gods who abandoned them to it's clutches, then... what can they possibly do? Were the generations of Elites that lost their lives to the Void for nothing, were their sacrifices in vain? Did they lose their beloved spies, their family, for nothing? How many more lives will be swallowed before a conclusion to all of the questions asked here are answered?
Time will tell, won't it?
