The Vengado (Airship)
Deep into the war of attrition between Llerathi batallions and the NUL army both nations were constantly harrasing the supply lines to gain some advantage over their enemy.
The nation of Dirdam made a proposal to the rest of the federation to deploy a weapon deep into enemy territory. Their previous contributions had ensured the NUL army had managed to consistently fight off various offensives, as such, most of the representatives were eager to hear about this new plan.
However, on the unveiling of the plan to the military committe, the first reaction was shock, uproar, and disbelief. The Dirdami were asking for a significant contribution in resources for their tinkerer corps to build a singular weapon, a ship that transversed the skies for weeks without resupply, capable of damaging supply units and town centres far away from the front lines deep into enemy territory. The request for resources and manpower was exhaustive and considerable. These were resources that could be used to arm warriors, aid the populace and build strong points, councillors and commanders alike felt the risk was too high. It took 8 months of negotiations and some success in the front that took off pressure from NUL logistics, which led to the sanctioning of the plan. The airship Vengado was to be the war-ender in what up until now had been a relative stalemate.
A newly formed corps called the Artificer 1st Corps. spent 18 months building the ship, roughly the size of a hamlet. The ship was equiped with crew and rations for two months. Massive propellers kept the ship in the sky burning various non-magical fuels. A bombardment bay opened at the bottom where various cannons could unleash mayhem from above their target. The ship had a single deactivated magical artifact secretly built with a single purpose: an emergency failsafe that could open a portal back to the original engineering bay. The portal hadn't been tested at scale, but the wizards working on the item guaranteed it would work. It was the only magical artifact allowed on board, as to ensure the ship could not be detected by any magic.
The military committee chose a particular area within the battle front where few troups could manouvre due to the mountaineous terrain. This would ensure the first incursion into the territory would be undetected. The ship succesfully raided a military column destroying various carts full of what were perceived as supplies. Cassualties where in the hundreds, and the operation was so swift the column's protection was too slow to react. The success of the first operation led to Artificer corps growing considerably. Raids continued over months and the Vengado became a significant force that while barely disrupting the sheer mass of supply lines supporting Llerath, was a significant dent on moral for NUL's enemy. For months patrols triangulated possible locations, destruction paths and raided areas. They hunted for the ship across the land, from near-front villages to the deep but the ship moved too swiftly from location to location.
The Vengado finally dissapeared, not a single raid was reported after 14 months of succesful incursions inside enemy territory. Some in NUL thought that an effective counter had been deployed by Llerath, others believed the Vengado had crashed in a mountain range north due to an unforeseen issues. Others say the ship reneged on their mission and left the land, maybe even in another plane. Only one truth remains, no one knows what happened in the last flight of the Vengado.
