Addersfield

Addersfield is an old town that relies on trading animal furs, rice, and gambling. The community is very tight-knit and participates in weekly communal potlucks. It once was a prominent mining town, until it ran out of iron reserves and was supplanted by Tunsted as the Eparch’s prominent mining town, reducing the mining tunnels to work for stone and feldspar.

Government

Krelman Jenard, a mousy man with the look of a miser, pushes for additional work in the mines, seeking to find an undiscovered plethora of minerals and ores. Unfortunately, many of the miners in the town have changed professions or moved their families to Tunsten, the Eparch's new favored mining town.   Addersfield is taxed fifteen percent (recently up from ten percent) of its tithings, either through gold, farm yield, or livestock, whose proceeds go to the Eparch's Polin, Isehalo.

Defences

A small militia of 50 routinely rotates shifts throughout the month; a levy of 200 militiamen can be called by the Krelman and Archons. Many of these soldiers are hunters and miners with minimal martial training.

Industry & Trade

A trade-town that has taken towards growing grains and gambling in recent years. It was once a prominent mining town, able to secure work in the iron trade; now it is more known for being a passerby town, focusing more on exporting what little grain and furs the townsfolk can gather.

Infrastructure

Over sixty percent of the town's buildings are two-storied, flat-roofed homes made from stone and clay. These homes were built later by its early settlers and are regularly maintained by its blue-collar workers, who typically reside in these modest homes. The remaining buildings are wooden, built on elevated cornerstones with peaked roofs; some of which were more recently renovated for comfort and leisure, mostly belonging to the well-to-do. For generations, superstition has kept the town from expanding by the town's reverence and fear of the nature spirits that live in the Dremeter Forest, west of Addersfield, seeking to find its resources and bounty from the mountain range of Twin Peaks Rise to the south. Over half of Addersfield is built along the slope of a hill, utilizing stone drains that transport rainwater and run off underneath the cobbled streets and into the farmland positioned south, where the water is used to grow wapato and wild rice and grains.

Districts

Addersfield is separated into three districts:
Low-Town: The majority of Addersfield is built along the slope of a small hill and manages irrigation pathways to collect water from rain into the farmlands below. The blue-collar workers are very crafty and adaptable if unfairly misjudged as lowly.   Three Bowls: The upper district of Addersfield, where the shops and Gambler's Lodge are located.   Citadel: The Citadel is where the Krelmen resides, which doubles as a sanctuary during times of siege. Outside of the Citadel rests two groves of Okin trees. The Iron Grove, which lies northward of the path outside the Citadel, was once home to a well-manned workshop of artisans and apprentices but has now grown limited in teachers since the mines lost their metals. To the south, the Forsever Green is a mostly untouched piece of land, where the town believes spirits visit as a place of rest on their journies.

Points of interest

  • A shrine to the Watchful Twins is located southeast of the town in the Forsever Green, along the road leading towards the mines.
  • A temple to Pelathin, The Father Who Provides, is established in the Low-Town district under the name of Rain & Favor. The High-priest is a man named Maister Pelron. The temples across Addersfiel each worship similar gods, but interpret them each lightly differently or hold other spirits in higher reverence. Rain and Favor believe Pelathin to be the father of all Dogarhu, or spirits residing in landscapes, made by a union with Gi Matera, the Mother Whose Body is the Land.
  • The Gamblers Lodge, owned by a figure known as "The Heavy-Hand", is both the favored place to be in Addersfield as well as the bane of its existence. Many with very few coin come in hopes to try their luck. Hardly content with earning double their starting sum, a handful of the community has fallen plague to the high-risk, high-reward environment and spend most of their time attempting to win a fortune, favored by the gods. Rumor has it that Krelman Jenard is one such addict, but he continues to deny spending more than an hour or two a week at the Lodge.
“My home sweet home, where my father was born and raised as a miner, just as his father, and just as I was; a lot of good that ended up being. My child won’t have to work a day in their life if all works out if my ancestors allow.” -Daryl of Addersfield
