Sect Leader

A sect leader is the head of the cultivation school and commonly inherited down unless the sect leader has no children, either their relatives or elder disciple can take over the sect but because little to no one wants to do that to preserve their family's place, they would want a son or a daughter with another sect to form an alliance.   The more powerful the sect leader, the more powerful their disciples will be. They are not only the ones to oversee the entries of students but also advice the teachers and attend councils.   Gathering the attention of the sect leader is considered a great honor.

Qualifications

At least a high cultivation rank and a golden core, sect leaders are cultivators that could ascend though that may be not true for most. All one needs is the approval of a master, even low level sect may just appoint the eldest son as the leader, so long as one is able to lead their people, clan members or disciples.

Requirements

Usually sect leaders are around 40 or 50 years of age or beyond but there is no age criteria, usually people would want wiser sect leaders but those with strength as their main focus, they usually want younger leaders same goes for those who hold beauty to a high standard.   Some examples:
Tian Chen sect is currently inherited position but in the past, the most powerful eldest disciple was the sect leader.
Shen Hun sect appoints only unmarried virgin females as sect leaders. (virgins are known to have great spiritual power)
Cheng Zhi sect is according to the most powerful disciple but also the most ambitious and richest, the current sect leader was appointed because of his ambition, smooth tongue and riches but doesn't fight himself.

Appointment

The sect leader has a seal or token that is passed down for generations, sometimes it is a seal carved with their crest but sometimes it can be an artifact like the Mei Su sect has a hairpin, Tian Chen a crown, Shen Hun a sword and Cheng Zhi a fan.   Only huge sect has ceremonies to celebrate their new leader. Some includes meeting with the sect elders to be transferred some secret technique, some includes just drinking and partying, some don't have parties and just gets down to business.

Duties

The duties vary, they are to make decisions for the sect and train the disciples, they are expected to help if the monster or creature is too powerful and maintain a good relationship with the people and other sects but sometimes it's hard to find one that does.

Responsibilities

Daily patrol, sorting of disciples, examination both on artifacts, grounds and disciples, assign homework or training sessions. Some special activities:   Tian Chen sect: daily mass lecture, is done once every month. daily mini competition, 'final boss' to spar with the disciples every month.
Mei Su sect: daily calligraphy class, painting and talking about history once every week. Though this may not be enforced if there are vacation weeks or matters they need to attend to.

Benefits

They are of course the richest in the sect given that the proceeds are all given to the sect and the sect leader, the disciples only given allowances they can spend on shopping since most things are provided in the sect. They have the most say in magical, cultiavtional or fighting incidents, they are experts in monster hunting and powerful hence many cannot deter them.

Accoutrements & Equipment

The robes reflect the student's uniform, either by colour or by design. Depending on the sect the indication of hierarchy is different.   e.g.
Tian Chen sect - the students have blue cultivation robes, there are 5 levels each level will add a small star on the back of their robe. Their sect leader will have a single big star that looks like the sun.
Mei Su sect - the students all have yellow robes, the sect leader will have the most

Cultural Significance

While many view sect leaders as person of wisdom and power but sometimes, their rule and disciple can be questioned by others. For example, while the sect leaders of Tian Chen sect are respected and powerful and wise, some may think they indulge in a rich life too much not really helping people anymore.   Kui Ying, is known as shady, their disciples bully the weak and poor and the sect leader barely joins the competitions and conferences, people almost never see her, thinking she might be dead or have some sort of deformity.
