World Whisperer

Art by @Rynchu on Instagram with permission to use
The candles that danced in the darkness of the Sanctuary seem to halt all at once, illuminating the white drapes to the inner workings of the temple. The stone serpents that coil around its sandy pillars seem to slither toward the floor, perhaps a trick of the heat. When a scaled hand parts the curtains, a holder of the most sacred of roles in the Yuan Ti city steps through- A World Whisperer, covered in ink depictions of a snake's body, a legion of snakes slithering beneath their feet.   The World Whisperers are priests among their people, rare individuals who are often surrounded by ancient, long-standing Yuan Ti cultures. Respected by all serpentine folk who know of them, the World Whisperers spread prophecy, teachings, and belief among their communities as worship to the most ancient primordial beings in Tritium, the World Serpent.
"The World Serpent is enigmatic to those ungifted, a mystery in our land's primordial history. Each droplet of their poison is sweet to only us. Each shedding of their power gifts only us a slither of their blessing. Each hiss of their tongue whispers primeval secrets into only our ears. Only a World Whisperer can utter the transgressions of our eternal world, not you human" ~ Ethlas, The World Whisperer of the Crag.

Career

Qualifications

The World Serpent's servants display resilience, devotion, and most of all, an acceptance of worldly cycles. They must believe that any ending is only a new beginning. To find a role in any ancient Sanctuary of the World Serpent, an individual must meet at least two criteria: exhibit a spiritual connection to the World Serpent, and be of Yuan Ti blood. To ascend the role of a World Whisperer, any Yuan Ti must endure inflictions unique to each sanctuary, to prove devotion to, and an acceptance of the philosophies they hold. This is what qualifies a soul for the role as a World Whisperer, a rarely new role, due to their eternal nature.   In a lifetime, a display of spiritual connection may arise uniquely for those gifted by the World Serpent. It may be a shared dream. Previous World Whisperers may merely be drawn to a new priest. An individual may display clerical power, the ability to bring light in the darkest of caverns, or the ability to whisper into people's minds. Whatever the initial spiritual connection to the World Serpent is, it does not mean a Yuan Ti is a World Whisperer. To become one, you must undergo a Sanctuary's training and trials.

Career Progression

To become a World Whisperer, you must first be a Priest of a Serpentine Sanctuary. There is little more in the way of progression in the role, beyond a society's perception of these priests. In Serpentine Sanctuaries, prayer and worship takes place in devotion to the World Serpent. There is only ever one or two World Whisperers among these temples, so very few ever ascend to this role, in fact, the final trial necessary to become a World Whisperer ensures the rarity of the position, as they become eternal, reborn upon death.

A Sanctuary's Trials

Training and trials to become a World Whisperer have varied throughout the role's incredibly long history. The trial often takes place in Summer, when the lands are hottest.

Whisper of the Voices

The first trial for any Priest in a Serpentine Sanctuary, is the Whisper of the Voices: A trial of spirituality and divination. A Yuan Ti must prove their connection to the World Serpent by withstanding the voices of one hundred snakes housed in the temple, the psychic afflictions of other priests, and if all goes well, that individual should hear one final hiss from the World Serpent ring through their thoughts, a message, an incoherent blessing only understood by that individual. Many collapse, many go mad, and those who withstand the voices, move on to the Blessing of the Sarrukh.

The Blessing of the Sarrukh

The Sarrukh are the first creations of the World Serpent, but are so powerful that they disrupt Yuan Ti society, and balance. Much like the royal purebloods of the Yuan Ti, the World Whisperers must seek out the Sarrukh in their deeply hidden temples, often within blistering hot deserts, or treacherous mountain ranges. Finding and surviving the journey to the Sarrukh is hard enough, leaving their temples alive is a whole other matter. Their blessing is imperative for World Whisperer's and an encounter with them may include combat, exercise of the mind, or any number of tasks with the ancient beings - they may not even deign to speak and kill an individual upon entering. These many headed serpent folk are immortal, ancient, and perhaps the most difficult trial.

The Eternal Birth

The Eternal Birth is the final trial in becoming a World Whisperer. The Yuan Ti must die. The entire philosophy of the World Serpent is the eternal nature of things, that when the World Serpent swallows its own tail, it continues to be born. The Yuan Ti enduring their final trial is splayed in a pool of other's blood who have previously partaken in the trial. In this blood, they have scales cut out from them, to create patterns of blood that resemble snakes along their body. They then must willingly accept death. Only then, is a World Whisperer reborn. If they open their eyes, they have been blessed with the role, and are reborn with tattoos of the snake along their body, that will heal over their wounds. If they do not awake, then they die. This engrains an acceptance of death among the priests of the World Serpent, and many Yuan Ti cultures.

Payment & Reimbursement

World Whisperer's are not paid regularly, but receive large sums of gold from the royal bloodlines they serve in cities upon ceremonies. They earn coin, jewels, and offerings from those paying for their service too.

Other Benefits

A World Whispererer does not find reward in their gold or jewels offered to them. Their greatest benefit and curse is their eternal nature, immortality. Often a World Whisperer is reborn with their markings, and societies know they are to be given to the church. They live long lives, and death is only momentary for them.

Perception

Purpose

The World Whisperers fulfil a number of spiritual and physical jobs among their Yuan Ti communities:
  • Blessing royal births of the royal bloodline, such as the Nahkrin family.
  • Holding weddings, for royal blood lines only.
  • Governing funerals of Yuan Ti, always offering their spirit to their god.
  • Providing answers to those who have questions, especially associated with their place in the world.
  • Creating tonics, and poisons for ailments, and infliction upon enemies.

Social Status

The World Whisperer's may be the most respected individuals within an entire Yuan Ti society. Even those among the royal blood line respect them, even sometimes as equals due to the spiritual connection they bare between the World Serpent and their societies. If an outsider were to kill or insult a World Whisperer, the consequence would be violent, be sure of that.

Demographics

There are very few World Whisperer's remaining in Tritum due to the culling of Yuan Ti societies in the continents of Ignis and Tenebris. They may be roaming open lands, but do not reside in any temple. Except for in Ultarn, where one World Whisperer remains in the Serpentine Sanctuary of Crag's Tongue - an ancient and powerful individual at that.
