West Men

The West Men are a people from the lands west of Veria, Azzilia, Accuentian, Albion, Corthund, and Eriu. Although there are those who would say they physically resemble Verians, they are comparatively more civilized, building vast kingdoms and true cities rather than riverbed encampments, and recording history and encoding laws rather than enforcing orally kept traditions.

Culture

Major language groups and dialects

Most West Men speak some recognizable dialect of Westmin Speech.

Common Etiquette rules

Men are expected to grasp one another at the forearm upon greeting each other. Women are expected to slightly bow to each other or to a man.

Art & Architecture

The most common form of artistic expression in the west are woven tapestries. These are almost always made by women. Men and boys might create small wood or bone carvings or add decorative flourishes to carpentry and metal work.

Coming of Age Rites

Coming of age rituals vary across the west. A noble son may have to recite the names of his forebears and the codices of the law from memory.

Funerary and Memorial customs

Bodies may be buried, burned, or both. Songs of prayer for the departed are common.

Ideals

Beauty Ideals

Men and women of any means are expected to keep themselves in respectable condition. Men will keep their beards trimmed or shaven and women their hair washed and untangled.

Courtship Ideals

Men will barter with a prospective bride's father for a maiden's hand.

Relationship Ideals

Women are expected to be subservient to men, but a noble woman can still command great respect and wield power. Ruler queens are not unheard of.
