Tears
Utility
Tears are wormholes used by spacecraft to cross the vast interstellar distances between star systems in remarkable short periods of time. Most craft travelling through the Tears tend to achieve an average speed of 1 light year per standard hour. It is not known exactly what medium the spacecraft are travelling through after passing through a Tear; sensor readings are typically unintelligible and inconsistent and extended periods of manual observation often leave the observer with serious headaches or worse.
Access & Availability
Nearly every explored star system has at least one Tear present which enable rapid transit between systems. A number of systems contain only one Tear, referred to as "dead-end" systems. Most systems have two Tears and are part of one of the galactic superhighways. There are also certain "Hub" systems which have multiple Tears that connect it to many other systems/superhighways.
Complexity
Although it is often speculated that the Yesk have created the Tears, there is no visible technology present around them which leads many scientists to believe they are naturally occurring wormhole phenomena. No known technology is capable of creating new Tears although it is rumoured that the Coalition and the UFFR are pursuing Symbiote based means of generating new Tears to further their expansions into the galaxy.
Discovery
The Tear phenomena was presumably discovered by the Yesk at some point in their distant past. As far as the current galactic civilizations are aware, the Tears in their systems either appeared with the arrival of a Yesk contingent or were always present throughout their history.
