Baetal

Basic Information

Anatomy

Height: 7'0" - 8'0" Exoskeleton segments are typically a contrast between vibrant and deep reds, oranges and yellows and dark, desaturated greys, browns, and blacks. Exoskeleton regeneration is limited without medical treatment so aged Baetals can often be identified by pitting, scarring or other types of damage.   Baetals are bipedal insectoids with two legs and four arms. Their languages are rich and expansive but also incompatible with the vocal mechanisms in most of the galaxy's known species. Baetal off-worlders will generally use a communication device to synthesize alien languages.

General Features

  • Size: You are a Medium creature.
  • Speed: Your base walking speed is 30 feet.
  • Languages: You know the common trade language, one of the Baetal languages (choose from Pheromonal, Clicker, Luminescent), and any other language of your choice.
  • Ability Point Increase: Increase your Strength and Constitution stats by 1 and choose one of Intelligence or Wisdom to increase by 1.
  • Powerful Build: You count as one size larger when determining your carrying capacity and the weight you can push, drag, or lift.

Optional Variant Features

Choose a maximum of one variant.

Sturdy Lineage

  • Exoskeleton: You have resistance to slashing damage and bludgeoning damage. In addition, when you are wearing no armor, your AC is equal to 11 + your Dexterity modifier.

Toxic Lineage

  • Poisonous Secretions: Any creature that grapples you or otherwise comes into direct contact with your skin must succeed on a DC 12 Constitution saving throw or become poisoned for 1 minute. A poisoned creature no longer in direct contact with you can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success.
    - You can also apply this poison to any piercing weapon as part of an attack with that weapon, though when you hit the poison reacts differently. The target must succeed on a DC 12 Constitution saving throw or take 2d4 poison damage.

Growth Rate & Stages

A Baetal can typically live up to ~90 years old. The initial larval stage can last up to 5 years followed by a 1 year pupal stage. Baetals are considered children until they are 15 years old, adolescents from 16 - 20 years, young adults from 21 - 24 and mature adults beyond that. Baetals are generally considered elderly at 75 years old.

Additional Information

Geographic Origin and Distribution

The Baetal homeworld is Phi'stik'aa which is presently under Feln occupation and more commonly known as the colony world of Bagusan. Few Baetal leave the homeworld but the most desperate have occasionally smuggled themselves offworld and travelled, by arduously slow sublight refugee ships, to an adjacent Daerpon controlled system in Independent Space (no direct Tear connection to UFFR space).

Civilization and Culture

History

Little is known about this seldom-encountered race prior to their world's colonization by the UFFR. The majority of the Baetal population make up the bulk of the Bagusan agricultural labour force while free Baetal civilizations, a fraction of the total population, are relegated to the less than ideal regions of their own world where they attempt to preserve their ways of life.
