Unstoppable Force

A hobgoblin army led by the warlord Paragast. In keeping with tradition the army was renamed after Paragast conquered the domains.   Based out of Fushmyr this army has conquered all of the domains making Paragast the undisputed leader of his people. With internal rivalries settled for now Paragast has been able to redeploy forces that were guarding the borders of each domain. This has allowed him to strengthen the defences along the northern border while freeing up legions for a campaign to the west and south.

Structure

The UF is commanded by Paragast who has taken the title of Dominator. Paragast is served by the Warlords of the dominions. Each Warlord command the forces raised in their own domains, though the Dominator does occasionally transfer some units between them. The Warlords are responsible for supplying their own forces though they are obliged to share the use of storage buildings, roads and other infrastructure.   The core of the UF are the Legion of the Mktulax. These units of disciplined, well-equipped soldiers have spent centuries fighting each other and the neighbouring lands. With conflict between the legions suppressed under Paragast’s rule the legions have expanded as there has been less need to replace casualties. Only hobgoblins are allowed to join the legions.   Warlords are served by Marshalls who typically command multiple legions. Marshalls tend to be more directly involved in giving orders during a battle than Warlords who are more concerned overall progress of a war rather than a battle.   The UF also makes use of irregular units made up of goblins, bugbears, ogres, and orcs. These units are used as scouts and the van and rearguard for the legions to help preserve the more valuable hobgoblin troops. For the most part these units are split by species with each species having a well defined role.
  • Goblins are used for scouting and as fodder when it is necessary to exhaust an enemy.
  • Bugbears are used for scouting, ambushes, and raiding enemy supply camps. They are sometimes oven command of goblins as well.
  • Orcs are used for raiding and dealing with enemy skirmishes. They tend to only be used in small groups as they are much more likely to rebel against their hobgoblin officers.
  • Ogres are used for attacking fortifications and breaking up enemy formations. They are also used to transport siege equipment.
Following the death of Andaxius the monsters in his domain spread to neighbouring lands, some escaping and other being driven out. Dealing with these creatures proved challenging for the UF until a way was discovered to tame the beasts. These savage creatures are now considered a valuable resource and expeditions are launched to gather wolves and the sub-species of ogre that have adapted to the cold of the far north.

Public Agenda

The UF has one simple purpose, to launch a pre-emptive assault on the sourthern lands before they have a chance to build up their strength and attack the north. This goal has resonated with many in the Mktulax as the signs of previous invasions are easy to see (even if they were centuries ago). However, Paragast (or at least a warlord who advise him) has realised that other threats cannot be ignored and the defence of the Mktulax domains as a whole has made it onto the army's prioriiies, even if it is a distant second.

History

Starting in Kefli
Like with all great hobgoblin armies the UF started as an idea in the head of an ambitious officer. In this case, a soldier from Kefli known as Paragast. Paragast has grown up in the shadow of Castle Dominant and it's history led hiim to believe that the people he and his brethren should be fighting were the ones on the other side of the teeth. While outspoken, Paragast had gotten on the bad side of his legion's commander and he seemed likely tobe dimissed as his company's Second. Fortunately for Paragast a freak accident killed his Capatin and he was promoted due to a look of any other obvious candidates

Moving beyond Captain still seemed unlikely until Paragast found himeslf in a position to save the life of another Legion's Commander, earning him a move to that legion and a new powerful backer. Paragast was soon seen as the preferred successor for the legion and when his Commander was killed in an ambush by unknown forces, Paragast was given control of the Legion.
The Legion
Renaming his new command the Unstoppable Force, Paragast spent considerable time building up his influence with the other legion commanders, persuading them that their warlord wasn't taking them in the right direction. While he was doing this his legion sat around doing very little, or simply marching between the strongholds in Kefli. He seemed to have a knack for always arriving a little too late to be involved with any serious combat, and it was a running joke that his force couldn't be stopped because it never got started in the first place. Despite his lack of victories, Paragast was able to seize control Kefli when the warlord was assasinated thanks to the commanders he had befriended (an inquiry at the time found that Paragast had no involvement in the assassination).
The Eastern Domains
Paragast named his domain's combined legions as the Unstoppable Force and set about trying to bring the other warlords over to his way of thinking. While thsoe who ruled the domains next to the teeth agreed with his assessment of the threat from the south Paragast was not able to bring them to accept him as the overall leader of the domains. The matter of leadership of the domains therefore had to be settled in the time honour manner - with conquest.   The conquest of another domain is not an easy thing, and Paragast has the disadvantage of being surrounded by multiple hostile forces. In order to overcome this he ordered to his legion commanders to attack the infrastructure that was normally considered to be protected by the laws of the Mktulax. At first the commanders refused, fearing they would lose their rank in the next life, but after most were executed the next set were more inclined to follow orders.

Paragast drove his legions through Mukulus and into Ephrimyr, razing settlements as he went. Ignoring any consideration for logistics he abandoned supply wagons, and even his own support companies in an effort to push through his enemies' defences. His commanders just about managed to make things work, though Mukulus was stripped bare of anything edible. Paragast also ordered his commanders to take some outrageous risks, that somehow seemed to pay off. A pattern of unlikely coincidences began to emerge, with bridges failing just in time to delay enemy reinforcements, or enemy messengers never passing on key information, despite a lack of interference from Paragast's forces. Many took this as a sign that Paragast's desire to attack the south was divinely inspired and moral began to drop in the other domains.
The Whole Mktulax
After butchering his way through Mukulus and Ephrimyr (and adding their remaining forces to his own, Paragast next moved on Grus. This domain was better prepared to withstand his advance, but once again providence came to Paragast's rescue. The warlord of Rieshim and his senior officers were caught in the collapse of a tower in Fushmyr. Their replacements were sympathetic to Paragast and they moved to conquer Drimyr before helping Paragast capture Grus. With more than half the domains under Paragast's rule, the Unstoppable Force was now worthy of the name and the remaining domains surrendered to the inevitable.   With control of the domains established, Paragast was able to start preparing for this long held ambition to invade the south. Staging areas were established in the ruins of Mukulus, and the warlords were ordered to start preparing plans for the invasion.

Recruitment
Despite it's legions the UF is not large enough to take on all of the foes to the south. In order to bolster their forces there has been an extended recruitment drive in the lands of the Hgtoha and in Andaxius’ Domain. While these new forces may be little more than fodder to tire their foes some of the recuits have proved to be more useful than expected and have earned a formal place in the UF.   Some of those working for the UF do not even realise that is what is happening. In several cases goblin leaders have been tricked into thinking they are preparing for their own invasion when they are really preparing supply bases for the UF.
Fortune or Something Else?
Paragast's detractors (of which he has many) are quick to point out that his command of the UF has been less than brilliant, with most of his successes coming by chance or the work of others. While some may believe it is the result of a divine blessing, others fear it may come from another source and are constantly on the watch for signs that this is really a trap to eliminate the UF.
Getting through the Teeth
There are only a few major passes suitable for gett the through the Teeth which can make moving troops and supplies through difficult. To overcome this small units were sent into the mountains to establish supply bases ahead of time. This plan came undone in the east thanks to the efforts of one of the Joint Strike Teams.
