A new kind of distiller that is changing the way potions are made.
Development
After his exile from
Chirin-on-Dimar Bovin was supported by
Nyls Factor as he continued to train in alchemy. Nyls was keen for Bovin to push the boundaries of what could be created using alchemy but always with an eye on what could be done to make the production processes cheaper. Many of the processes Bovin had learned relied on creating fairly weak liquids and then reducing them to increase the potency. This could take a significant amount of time and effort to avoid damaging the brew, so Bovin focused his efforts on improving this part of the process.
With Nyls' financial backing Bovin was able to experiment with various designs involving glass and metal tubing, and he found some success by altering the standard designs. However, it was after a mistake with one of his mixtures that he came upon his major innovation. His mistake resulted in the pressure within his distiller being altered. This affected the boiling point of the liquids inside and happily led to an improved result. After careful experimentation Bovin came up with a way of controlling the pressure with a variety of valves and pumps.
Licensing
When Bovin presented Nyls with the outcome of the new design it was clear to Nyls that there were two ways to profit from this. The first was to produce potions themselves for a lower price and increase the profit margin. The second was to offer the opportunity for others to use this new development for a suitable fee. In the aftermath of the
War of False Freedom there was little profit to be made in
Chirin-on-Dimar from selling potions so Nyls made contact with the
Millerson’s in the
Kingdom of Caresnas. The Millersons readily agreed to have the new distiller licensed under Caresnas' laws, with Nyls and Bovin receiving significant compensation.
Improved Products
As the new design has been picked up a variety of improved products have been produced. One of the most common is an improved healing potion. While concentrated healing potions in the form of the healing shot have been around for a while, the new distiller has allowed them to be produced at an equivalent cost to what regular healing potions used to cost. This has led to the more concentrated form becoming the standard form, and the techniques are now being applied to a variety of other potions.
