220 / 13 / 01 - Motivation for attacks revealed
The swarm of demons that has been terrorising Chirin over the last week has finally been defeated thanks to the combined efforts of the Guard, the Patrol, and brave groups of volunteers. As we all breath a sigh of relief that the attacks are at end, our thoughts turn to those who lost their lives during those dreadful nights. Many of you may be wondering how such an invasion could happened, and ultimately who is to blame. We are pleased to be able to provide answers to those questions thanks to efforts Captain Vyken Guardian who has been working tirelessly to both protect the people of Chirin and uncover the truth of the incident.
The first attack started in the market square in West Side, when the demons erupted from a box placed near one of the stalls. Eye witness accounts provided Captain Vyken with the identity of the person who left the box there, a warforged named Daniel. Daniel was quickly brought in for questioning, and while he admitted leaving the box there, he claimed it was just a delivery. Daniel was employed at Albedo Carriers so this wasn't an unreasonable claim, but further investigation revealed that Daniel hadn't had any deliveries to make that day.
Before resuming his questioning of Daniel, Captain Vyken sent Patrollers and volunteer runners all over Chirin to enquire about sightings of Daniel. While this information was being collected, the Captain returned to interrogating Daniel. Using the information that Daniel had lied about making a delivery, Captain Vyken was able to get Daniel to admit he had deliberately put the box in the market square. While coy about the existence of any other boxes, Daniel seemed to lose any reticence around talking about his motives. He revealed that he had released the fiends in order to punish the non-warforged residents of Chirin for the outcome of the vote on the warforged's status and the treatment of Stonewall. He claimed he had been told that the demons wouldn't attack warforged, and we have confirmed that there have been no deaths amongst the warforged.
As reports came back from the patrollers and volunteers that Captain Vyken had sent out to gather information, he used the ever increasing intelligence on Daniel's movements to persuade the villainous warforged to divulge where he had placed other boxes. This information was swiftly passed on to Bowin Gableson and Perfin Searcher who were coordinating the searches for the demons. With the most pressing information acquired Captain Vyken left the remainder of his questions until after the demons had been dealt with.
When the attacks had been gotten under control, Captain Vyken returned to interrogating Daniel with two key questions outstanding. Who else had been involved and how had they acquired the demons so quickly. With his revenge at least partially thwarted and faced with Vyken's implacable resolve to get answers, Daniel revealed that there had been one coconspirator. Though he didn't give a name, Daniel provided a detailed description of an elderly human male that matched the dark caster Traylin. The nature of the agreement between the two also matched Traylin's methods, with Daniel being required to agree to perform a service for the person we presume to be Traylin in exchange for the means to carry out his revenge. According to Daniel's testimony Traylin had visited him two days before the attacks to make him an offer for the means to carry out his revenge. According to Daniel he hadn't been considering anything until the visit by Traylin, but when offered the opportunity he had seized it.
After hearing all this Captain Vyken asked that Bowin Gableson examine Daniel for signs of spells. The first citizen was, as ever, happy to help with anything to do with protecting Chirin and was able to confirm several of the Captain's suspicions. There were several spells on Daniel, one which would have lowered the warforged's inhibitions slightly, and another akin to a curse which could be activated in the future. According to Bowin the first spell would have had no more effect than a couple of pints of ale would have on a human, while the second was likely a way to ensure Daniel upheld his end of the bargain. Although Bowin offered to remove the spells, the cost of the materials required led to the decision to leave this until Daniel's fate has been decided at trial.
