As many of our readers will be aware, earlier this month a question was raised by the Natural Workers Movement (NWM) around the status of the warforged. The NWM put in a formal request for the council to review the decision of their predecessors that the warforged are people and entitled to the same protections and rights as any other person. The justification given for the formal question was that the original council made their decision under duress.
After extensive discussions the council agreed that the original decision may be viewed as having been taken under undue pressure. Given the broad reaching consequences of such a decision and in the interests of ensuring that that the peoples' will was heard, the council decided to put the question to a public vote.
On 14th Ling the citizens of Chirin were asked to decide whether the warforged are people. The votes have now been counted and we can tell you that the final tallies were:
- The warforged are golems 17%.
- The warforged are people 83%.
The vote shows that an overwhelming majority of the citizens of Chirin are in favour of the warforged continuing to be classed as people. The council released the following statement when announcing the outcome.
"We are pleased to be able to once again announce the outcome of a democratic decision made by the people of Chirin. Thank you to all of you who participated in the debates and discussions about this issue, and most especially thank you to all those who took the time to vote. We had a fantastic turn out and the will of the people of Chirin is unmistakeable. Though the original decision to consider the warforged as people may have been under duress, the respect and trust the warforged have clearly earned from all of you has shown it was the right decision. With the question decided through the best traditions of a free and open democracy this issue is now permanently settled."
Eskevar of Braledon, leader of the NWM had this to say after hearing the results.
"While it is not the result some of the movement might have hoped for, we do not consider this a loss. The council listened fairly to all sides of the debate, and we look forward to working with them closely in the coming months to find ways to address our concerns".
In addition to classing the warforged as people, the vote also confirmed that the warforged should pay additional taxes to ensure they contribute fairly to the upkeep of Chirin.
