Nether Coin

Zagan's Greatest Scam

Nether Coin was a scam currency once brought to Totania by the Devil Zagan, before he was president. It caused chaos wherever he brought it, but it made him immensely wealthy.

A Devil's Trick

Metal is not difficult to come by in Manhottan, especially for a rising businessman like Zagan.   He bought up cheap metal, turning it into coins and bringing it to Totania in -533.   His first stop: Landhelm in Dwarven Territory. After that, he took a trip around the world, selling off Nether Coin to many gullible surface folks, still mostly unaware of Hell.   While there, he convinced many wealthy Totanians, nobles from Camor to Zephys and Kochi, that it was incredibly valuable Hell metal not available anywhere else on Totania.
"Imagine the value of this when the rest of the world finds out you have it! Already, it is worth enough to make your kingdom the wealthiest on the surface, but they will empty out their treasuries to get their hands on this. It has a special value, after all. It is magic."
— Zagan
The Dwarves were chosen first because he knew how easy they'd be to convince. The Elves, with in a city of gold, were much wealthier, but Zagan convinced them that they could surpass the Elves by buying Nether Coin. The Elves, meanwhile, were told that if the Dwarves got their hands on this instead (which Zagan threatened to do if they declined), they would be able to buy out Camor instead of invading it.

President Zagan

President Zagan rules over the layer of Manhottan, and is one of the most feared Devils around, serving as a counterbalance to even Satanael himself in the markets of Hell.   Zagan is likely one of the richest individual beings in existence, only rivaled by Satanael, his predecessor Helle, and perhaps President Mephistopheles of Laveyorn.   The only mortals whose wealth may match Zagan's are the Golden Dragon Lord Kath the Eternal and the Nerifir Royal Family of Camor, but even then, it is unlikely.   To become President of Manhottan, and a wealthy businessman like he is, Zagan needed to be ruthless and unforgiving. He has killed so many people that he himself has lost count, saying:
"The only thing I count in that sense is how much money I've made from it. And I will tell you, that numbers in the trillions."
— President Zagan
Worse, Zagan brought this coin to the Avian camps, before the Korvian Plague swept through them. This nation was still poor and struggling to overcome their Orcish neighbors, but Zagan convinced them that money would be the solution. All over the world, Nether Coin was bought up until Zagan himself ran out of it. And then, the real chaos started.   Merchants started traveling, trying to sell the Nether Coin to other nations at high prices, only to find that they also had Nether Coin. By the time merchants from Udai made their way to Elone, everyone there already knew that, and trouble was starting to rise, as Dwarves and Elves thought the other had stolen it from them. Others realized they'd been scammed and were now bankrupt with worthless hunks of metal from Hell in their possession.   But Zagan's scheme was not finished. He had timed it perfectly, so that when the merchants all returned home, realizing their failure and losses, the coins would go off. What that meant is that they would release the "magical" property he'd mentioned: an enchanted smell so disgusting that anyone who came close to it would be unable to stop vomiting. It spread so far that entire cities were engulfed in the smell for a year before the coins were all thrown into the garbage dumps or the sea (many of which ended up in the dumps of Vitroveil). Meanwhile, the Devil had made off like a thief, wealthy beyond belief, and returned home triumphant.
