Communirocks

The Future of Communication

An enchanted item with the ability to communicate with each other, communirocks are a special magical item allowing for precise communication over short distances without the need to exert magical energy.

A Magical Way to Connect

Made for communication between small groups, communirocks were first theorized as a way to democratize the way wind mages can communicate with the air itself, but without the need to actually perform a task while doing it. The rock would do it for you.

To use the rock, one needed only the ability to draw out some of the mana stored within it, activating the item. It has no time or mana limit, at least no observable one.   Communirocks do not have a long range. They were designed for the largest city in the world, Zephys, and so their range spans the length (and height!) of the floating city.

Two Types of Rocks

Not all communirocks are made the same, and they have a distinct difference between each other that make them only similar in name and central purpose. Below, the different kinds of communirocks will be detailed. To learn why there are two types of communirocks, check the sidebar.

Dual Inventors

Communirocks were first theorized as a possibility by the Draconian mage Salasar Feaphed during his studies at the Magic College of Zephys.   He did not create them until decades later when he had graduated from the school, passing one on to each of his disciples in the Weave Initiative. Nine were passed on to those students, each containing a fraction of his consciousness.   However, simultaneously, another scholar he'd worked with had been developing his own communirocks off of Salasar's original proposal: Bhukk the Studious spent decades underneath the Modan Peninsula, and there, he made a communirock for each of the three main warriors of the Modan Freedom Fighters.   Both were unaware of the other's attempts, and while Salasar's all worked perfectly, Bhukk had one failed prototype, but had more time in his life to perfect it than Feaphed, who was dead before Bhukk even got his communirocks working.

Initiative Communirocks

The first communirock, dubbed the Initiative Communirocks, are limited to only nine models. These are coveted items due to their rarity and power, as they each contain part of Salasar Feaphed himself, their creator. If one has an Initiative Communirock, they can commune with Salasar himself as if he were alive.

These nine Initiative Communirocks were given to the members of the Weave Initiative first, to impart Salasar's wisdom to them even if he was elsewhere/dead. This means that originally, their owners were:
  • Orlayas Ojeux
  • Shatt Gunn
  • Kathleen Ramone
  • Lorakaen Shinebright
  • Ogonn Ha
  • Finethir Shinebright
  • Murphy Law
  • Hameila Neconkus
  • Cousin Parry
While some of these individuals, being Elves, Devils, or simply skilled mages, have lived long lives and likely held onto their communirocks, those of the deceased Initiative members are highly sought after, and said to be among the most expensive enchanted items. They hold not just the soul of Salasar Feaphed, but the accumulated knowledge of himself and whichever one of his students once held the rock.   The Initiative Communirocks can also detect each other. As they have a living consciousness inside of them, they can sense when another communirock enters their range, and can communicate with each other. This can happen within the rocks and they then alert the owner about their discovery. This makes them not only helpful in identifying others who own these collectors items, but it has made it something of a treasure hunt, using the Salasars (or Holosars as they call themselves) to hunt other Initiative Communirocks down.   While scholars and mages would best utilize them, these communirocks are instead collector's items sought out by the wealthy of Totania, and the knowledge they store may as well be lost, as they don't intend to spread it.

Reedrock

The second type of communirock, Reedrocks, are named after their creator, Bhukk Reed. These do not have a part of Bhukk within them, as they were made exclusively for communication on missions for the Modan Freedom Fighters. Some call it a missed opportunity, as the intelligent Orc was a brilliant mind that scholars would love to have immortalized, just as much as Feaphed. But Reed never saw himself in his work, and did it only for the sake of facilitating communication for those around him.   The original owners of these were: They were temporarily given to the Mardaar Family while on a mission in Dembar, but they were then returned to their original owners.   Their range is somewhat longer, at least for the original three Reedrocks. These were later made in a larger batch for students of Bhukk, as he wanted them to be able to find and communicate with each other like he was unable to do with his friends. The original set was three communirocks (with one faulty rock that barely worked). The second set is said to have been a full batch of a dozen, and the third was half a dozen, as Bhukk is said to have lost one of his pupils while making it, and lost interest in continuing the process.   Many mages have tried to replicate these, saying that if they did, long-distance communication could be revolutionized. The issue is that all of the rocks connect with each other (though the Initiative ones may be able to communicate with just each other as well), and if everyone had a communirock, it would be a mess of messages conflicting with each other, with no clarity or hope of understanding. If communirocks were to be mass-produced and distributed, it would need to be a third type capable of deciding who they are communicating with. Still, no one has been able to replicate even the flawed Reedrock, let alone the advanced Initiative Communirock.
