Captain of the Nerodil Guard

The Geltic Commander

The highest-ranking soldier in the Kingdom of Man's army, the Captain of the Nerodil Guard is the leading figure in the largest subsection of the Geltic military. This group, the Nerodil Guard, is tasked with defending the Geltic capital city of Nerodil. The title of "Captain" is actually a misnomer, as their primary role is that of Marshal, raising and levying forces for war and defense of the Kingdom.

Despite this, they are still the commanding officer of the troops defending the city, and so the title of Captain still applies.

Humanity's Defender

The title "Captain" in the Geltic army dates back to before the founding of the Kingdom of Man, during the Dreamless Sleep. One prominent figure involved in stopping the rampaging Death Mage Varth Dreamless was an Elven soldier named Narkard Leran.   At the time, Narkard was First Captain of the Elven Guard, though he told future King Gellark Lionrage about the leading position of the Elven Guard, Captain Commander, a title that Narkard hoped to one day secure. Thus, the rank of Captain in the Geltic army, and the first division in the army being named after the Elven Guard, is a tribute to the hero Narkard Leran and his efforts to help humanity in its earliest years.   Despite this, one of the main purposes of the position is to defend against Elven attacks and interference in Geltic affairs, and even Narkard Leran himself (after becoming Captain Commander) has been known to curse his misfortune, inspiring such an enemy.   The position was always respected, as it led the Geltic army, but it gained worldwide renown when the first Dwarven attack on Geltic citizens was repelled by the Kingdom of Man's forces, and the command of Alethandra Dohdz. She is said to have slayed a Dwarven General in combat and received a letter of recognition from Captain Commander Narkard Leran praising her skill in combat.

Leran would later come to regret this after coming to blows with Dohdz herself, who was a formidable opponent, and then later Captains that followed in her footsteps. It was, in the five hundred years (15-550) that the Elven Captain Commander held his position, a common challenge for those holding this rank to seek out Narkard and duel him, trying to prove themselves equal to Dohdz (though few ever did manage it). His successors did not take as kindly to this challenge until the appointment of his son Hadon Leran as Captain Commander nearly 300 years later in the late 700s-early 800s.   The Captain of the Nerodil Guard is the ultimate authority in the Geltic military, answering only to the King of Mankind and his Royal Court. Almost every soldier dreams of one day commanding the army as Captain of the Nerodil Guard, though many who have held the title do not believe it to be such a luxurious position, despite getting to live in the castle.

Duties

The Captain of the Nerodil Guard, being the leading figure in the military, can mostly decide their own duties, and only has a few things they must do. First among these is, of course, to serve the King and Queen of Mankind, though this is the duty of all soldiers and citizens in the Kingdom of Man. The only difference is that the Captain of the Nerodil Guard is asked to do this by the King's side as often as possible, and when they are not directly protecting the King, they are asked to at least assign soldiers who are capable enough to do so in their stead.   The next official duty is defending the city of Nerodil. As it is the home of the King and the center of the Kingdom, they must protect the city first and foremost, keeping the soldiers of the Nerodil Guard itself always on their toes and ready for an attack.

The final official duty of the Captain is to levy forces around the Kingdom of Man, checking in on armies under the command of other high-ranking soldiers, as well as keeping the Geltic Nobility who command some of these troops, like Marquesses and Dukes, in line. The Captain is responsible for recruitment and sending new recruits to Ortoise to train.
