But there's TWO of them

"You are blessed by the Gods. The child you carry shall become the next prophet and will speak the will of the Three."
Nothing has ever caused as much controversy as what happened in the the village of Gooseville in the year 321. The village was devoted followers of the Three Deities of Death, and, as still is custom in many places, women went to the temple when they were expecting a child to get their future read by the Seer.   But in 321, a woman got a reading that was highly unusual. It was said that the child she carried would become the next prophet. While this definitely happens sometimes, it is still a big deal every time. The woman, whose name is now lost to time, immediately got to move into the temple so that the priests and priestesses there could care for her until she gave birth. The child would then stay with the temple, and they would raise it.   However, what happened was not something any Seer had predicted. Twins were born, a boy and a girl. This cause absolute chaos within the temple as they now didn't know how to handle this, or how to interpret the Seer's words.

A Church Split in Two

The followers of the Three now had to choose. Which child was the prophet? Or, as a very small group said, had the Seer been wrong altogether?   The church got split into two major factions: one who followed the boy, named Elymai, and one who followed the girl, named Elaeth.   The ones who followed Elymai stated that as he had been born first, it was obviously he who was the prophet. The fact that two of the Three are also usually depicted as male made these people see the boy as more important as well.   Elaeth's followers however stated that the Sister among the Three is the most important of the Three, thus the girl was obviously Her prophet. The girl had also been born with the umbilical cord around her neck and almost died, which they took as a sign that she was closer to the Three Deities of Death.

Effects of the Events

As the children grew, the split within the church became more and more apparent. They both got the very best education, and as they grew they both spoke as prophets.   In 346, when they were both 25 years old, Elymai was assassinated. It was deemed obvious it was the work of Elaeth's followers, even though they firmly denied having anything to do with it.   Two years later, Elaeth was caught in an angry mob of Elymai's followers and killed in the chaos.   To this day, the followers of the Three are still split. One part still consider Elymai a prophet and see the two Brothers as the main deities of the Three. Another part follows the words of Elaeth and consider the Sister the most important of the Three.   Today, however, there is also a third part that started showing up around the year 400. This group considers both of the twins as prophets, and thinks it is stupid to consider any of the Three are more important than another.

As soon as I read the quote, I was like 'oh no'. Personally, I think the third faction might have the correct idea. But now everyone's dead because no one could play nice!
