Firan Zal'honan

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

A wide grin flashes as brightly as the perfectly cleaned orange glasses on top of their nose. This tall charmer has gone by many names over the centuries, and depending on the affiliations of whoever may request it, their identity may vary.   Firan Zal'honan is a tall humanoid that seems to appear royalty no matter the setting they find themselves in. Whenever one might be lucky enough to be within the genral vicinity of Firan, they are met with a scent which could only be compared to a comfortable bonfire on an otherwise freezing night at the beach.

Special abilities

Angelic Weapons. Firan's weapon attacks are magical. When Firan hits with any weapon, the weapon deals an extra 4d8 radiant damage.

Magic Resistance. Firan has advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects.

Coin Flip. Firan flips his coin and throws it at a target. Ranged Weapon Attack: +8 to hit, reach 90 ft., one target. Hit: 23 (4d8 + 5) force damage plus 18 (4d8) radiant damage.

Chronal Rewind (3/Day). Firan touches another creature. The target wounds close as if they never even happened and regains 20 (4d8 + 2) hit points and is freed from any curse, disease, poison, blindness, or deafness.

Planar Puppeteer. Firan invokes a fragment of influence to momentarily control a target like a puppet. The target makes a Wisdom saving throw (DC 20). On a fail, the puppet's turn is entirely in Firan's hands.

Reality Shatter (Recharge 5–6). Firan breaks reality itself, tearing reality apart in a 20ft radius within 120ft that he can see. Every creature that is concentrating on a spell or ability fails their concentration. All creatures within the sphere must roll d4, the outcome resulting in one of four options.
1 = You become blinded or deafened for d4 turns.
2 = You're teleported to a random spot within the sphere and are incapacitated.
3 = You fall prone and take 22 (3d8 + 8) psychic damage.
4 = Roll on the Long-Term Madness table.

Coin of Fate. As a reaction, Firan can flip the coin to manipulate the outcome of an attack or an event in the fight. Whenever a natural 1 or natural 20 occurs on the playing field, and Firan can see this happening, they cause the opposite effect.

Chronomantic Echo (1/day). As a reaction, Firan reverses the last action taken by a target within 30ft that they can see. When doing so, Firan takes 32 (4d10 + 10) psychic damage.

Coincidence

Firan carries an ornate, ancient-looking coin—one side gleams perfectly polished, the other is scarred and blackened, as if burnt by something beyond mortal understanding. Whenever he’s asked for help—or if he finds himself at a crossroad—he flips it, pretending to leave the decision to fate.

But here’s the truth: Fate has already decided.

No matter how many times he flips, the correct outcome always happens. He can pretend to be playing the odds, but the reality is that he’s chained to fate itself, unable to act in ways that truly disrupt the course of events.

The coin isn’t just a tool for fate—it’s a quiet tragedy wrapped in elegance. Firan plays it off as a game, but beneath the smirk, every flip is a question he already knows the answer to: Am I still a prisoner?

The Truth Behind the Coin

Firan uses the coin flip as an excuse, pretending he’s bound by its result, when in reality, it’s just a tool for him to accept the inevitable. If fate has already decided something, the coin will never contradict it. He could flip it a thousand times, but the correct outcome will always win. He doesn’t control whether he helps, only when and how. The coin is both a comfort and a curse—it gives him the illusion of free will, but it also reminds him that he has none.

Emotional Core of This Trick

Firan is rooting for the party but bound by forces beyond his control. He pretends to be in charge, when in reality, he is the one being played.

Integration In-Game

When the party first notices it, Firan uses it as a fidget toy to pass the time.

''It's just a silly habit, really. Some people bounce their leg, others tap their fingers, I have my coin.''
— Firan Zal'honan

Later, Firan would use it casually- as if it were a joke.

''Shall I lend my aid? Let's have it to chance.''
— Firan Zal'honan

Eventually, the party notices how Firan never uses it for gambling and that it always ends on the same outcome; the figure of a faded eye. If pushed, his amusement falters, just for a second.

''Hmm. You'd be surprised how often it lands this way.''
— Firan Zal'honan

There should be a moment where Firan flips the coin and doesn't immediately look at it. Maybe it's just before a battle, just when someone is about to die, or when the party faces an impossible choice.

But this time he doesn't want to look. Someone in the party notices. Firan would repeat his trademark smile, but it's wrong this time. They'd quitely ask whether it really matters and then pockets the coin. This is the first real crack in their mask- the moment when the party realizes he hates this.

At some point, when things seem truly out of control, a player might flip the coin for him and get the opposite result. The party sees a rare thing- Firan genuinely looks surprised. He doesn't say anything at first, just... stares at it. Then, he gives a small, bitter smile and mutters.

''Well, well. Maybe there's hope for me yet.''
— Firan Zal'honan

There's a moment where Firan shouldn't have had time to flip the coin. Maybe they were running from an enemy, or in the middle of a high-stakes negotiation, but somehow, the coin was already in the air before anyone asked him anything. It’s as if he knew what they were going to ask before they even spoke. It was never about decision-making. The coin flips because something else is making the choices for him.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

A mask of charm and congeniality conceals one of the most ingenious and utterly ruthless intellects to stalk through the planes. A wandering scholar, Firan Zal’honan travels through the different planes with relative ease.

Failures & Embarrassments

Due to their time as a Darklord of Darkon, Firan Zal'honan is afflicted by a curse. Ever since visiting The Amber Temple in Barovia and gaining the powers to traverse the planes without trouble, Firan is completely incapable of learning any new forms of magic.

Intellectual Characteristics

Firan is an enigmatic and abrasive expert, but their knowledge of the domains and their secrets is without peer.

Personality Characteristics

Motivation

Firan Zal'honan knows which hands to shake and when exactly to do so. They consider their carefully orchestrated role in existence most valuable and are very persistent on remaining a person of high stature throughout the planes. Even though they no longer wish to be leader of any plane, Firan adores the affinity from people that comes with their ability to traverse the planes with ease.

Social

Contacts & Relations

Firan is truly rooting for the party, but his heritage makes it impossible for him to intervene. If at any point he actually does, things will turn out much worse.

If, for instance, a character is dying and Firan is pressed into helping, he'll flip his coin and put it away before seeing the result. The character he'd then save will keep ending up in deadly situations until they finally do end up dying.
