Leyline

Leylines are channels where magic power flows like an invisible river winding across the landscape. Leylines fuel both arcane and divine magic. The lines themselves are invisible to normal sight, but divination magic quickly reveals their presence. To spellcasters trained to find them leylines stand out as glowing torrents of energy.

Manifestation

Leylines follow the contours of the lands they flow across. Learned spellcasters can study the features of an area and determine whether leylines are present. Creatures with close ties to the land can can tell the difference between an area graced with a leyline and one without. Druids, rangers, woodsmen, farmers, miners and even architects have been known to learn the telltale signs of a leyline’s presence.

All magic originates with the leylines. Areas near Titanic strength leylines can cause mutations and enchantment of mundane creatures in a way that permanently affects their line. This can happen to both plants and animals, and of course thinking creatures too.

Mastery of leyline magic, as well as the use of leylines to collect magical essence has been a boon for everyone. Though standard magic has a long history of use by the various peoples, the direct tapping into leylines is a relatively recent activity which has changed the world.

Localization

Natural pathways through terrain are easy channels for leylines to follow. They often parallel waterways, rivers and even canals. Moving earth and water can sometimes alter a leylines path. Such work is hazardous, because results can be unexpected.

Mechanics

Leyline can be used by spellcasters to enhance their spells, though it can be dangerous. If a magic used casts a spell within 30 ft of a leyline they can attempt to tap into the power of the leyline. This requires a successful spellcasting ability check, no proficiency bonus added. DC is 10 + the spell’s level. If the check passes the spell is modified according to the strength of the leyline (weak, strong or titanic). If the spellcaster knows how to lock into the leyline prior to casting they do not need to roll the ability check. If they fail by less than 4 there is not effect. If they fail by more than 4 the spell is cast normally but the spellcaster suffers backlash. Roll a d10 for either enhancement or backlash effects
Leyline magic can also be harvested into magical essence which can be used for the production of artifacts. Such leyline essence farming requires specialized equipment and knowhow, one reason leyline farms aren’t built over all known leylines.
Leylines can be used in large scale magical artifact production by trained mage wrights who can lock on to a leyline.
